Selected Ambient Works (especially Blue Calx, z twig, weathered stone etc) is NewAge.
Its for crystal wearing, pot smoking hippies who mediatate and perform QiGong on the weekends and talk about astrology at work. It should be sold in a NewAge store next to Buddhist flute music and books on wicka and endangered animals calendars. Disuss.

So all but 2 of you have been nothing but vague. I tend to think it goes above and beyond the NewAge fare, but I can't help but feel a few of the tracks belong on "Zen Garden: The Path to Meditative Enlightment".

SAW 2 is what we call ambient music... it's often said that Brian Eno invented it, and SAW 2 sounds a lot like old Brian Eno albums... if ambient is also new age... well i guess that's fine... i'm not even really sure what the fuck new age music is any ways...

yes i agree. but then what is a genre of music anyway? it's mostly defined by the people listening to it. and i think new age vaguely-spiritual-as-long-as-i-can-still-smoke-pot hippies would probably dig it, maaaan.

i thought aphex released SAW2 as a pisstake of new age music, and to show how ambient music should be done. SAW2 is far above the wank you find in the CD racks in bong shops.
I sometimes worry (if thats the right word) that FSOL sounds a bit like new-agey faux-spiritualistic bullshit. but then of course I tell myself its much more fucking decent than that.

SAWII is blatantly great, but that doesn't mean it can't appeal to people who also like pseudo-mystical shite.
football is a great game but it also appeals to people who want an excuse to fight in the streets and yell racist chants. it has no bearing on the quality of the game itself.

pot smoking, meditation and animal calendars seem fun and interesting to me and I'd be interested in that "Buddhist flute music" if it's any good...
...on the other hand, crystal wearing, QiGong and astrology sound a bit pointless to me.
maybe I'm half a new age (SAW2 loving) hippy :)

Anybody notice the ridiculous resonance (if I'm using the correct term) on most of the tracks? The midrange frequencies are crazy high and REALLY stand out through headphones. It sounds like the synths are heavily distorted as a result.
I think this album is best listened to through good speakers. Been listening to this album for a week straight on the bus through headphones in the mornings for about 45 min each day, and its one thing that I've found consistently in my face.

look for recordings of tibetan buddhist monks...there is something haphazard and raw about their music that i really like a lot.
crashing cymbals, low, guttural chanting and screeching flutes and horns

imo new age is music that is made for, or is associated with the "new" spiritual movements that came out of the late 20th century.
ambient, is more just music for musics sake... not attached to a larger movement.
kind of like rock and christian rock. whats the difference? I hear guitars, drums, bass, singing? same elements. But christian rock is more about christ, then rockin out. good example?
