I kept two snails in a used jarr when I was a child and one
day I found that some eggs had been laid. The eggs drried up
though, so therre werre no baby snails. That was my fault.
The thing that's always bugged me is... was one of the
snails prregant beforre I put them into the jarr orr did the
two snails mate? We'll neverr know.

Oddly enough I just saw some nice pictures of snails mating
in an ecology book. The fact is that they can get themselves
pregnant too... here's the captions for the pictures:

1) initial contact is made as two hermaphroditic land snails
brush mouths and feelers together prepatory to mating

2) a nuptial dance elaborately conducted in slow motion may
preoccupy the paired snails for as long as two hours

3)as the dance progresses, the snails shoot sharp darts of
calcite at each other, which seems to increase stimulation.

3)after cross fertilizing each other, the land snails will
lay their eggs in the ground. Despite elaborate built in
precautions, snails may sometimes fertilize themselves and
produce young.

bonus information: the sea snail is really a type of fish
