this guy has always been on my "artists to check out" list... but i never have for some reason... i heard this one thing once with all these computer speech things going on and i thought it was woeful... can somebody recommend this guy? or is it shithouse.

Nobukazu Takemura varies WILDLY in quality. Definitely check out his remix of roni size - brown paper bag though, a good "not too abstract" starting point.

scope and hoshinokoe are my favorite. hoshinokoe is full of pretty, quiet melodies, a bit similar to susumu yokota. scope is much more glitchy and unstructured. there was a lot of buzz about scope back when it came out, but it's not really very mind-blowing by today's standards.. it's territory that oval covered quite thoroughly. nonetheless, a good album.

check out his alter ego child's view also. the album "funfair" is a nice mix of his abstract styles along with an epic d&b track and a nice analog remake by the dylan group.
otherwise i'd recommend "scope."

I have 10th. It has its moments, but feels like there's way too much filler.
I think the album is very close to 80 minutes, and some of the tracks seem to go on forever without any sort of direction.
"FallsLake" is a neat little tune.

I like all of the albums on that site... but hoshi no koe and scope would be good, I guess.

Hm, now I'm intrigued. An artist who has the nerve to be wildly inconsistent is an artist that takes chances and goes places. Or else he doesn't have full mastery of his art. Anyhoo, mastery is overrated.
Falls Lake - I also niticed it's quite good judging just from the preview sample - I like things that are melodic and chromatic at the same time, like some of Plaid's better (i.e., listenable) moments.

Listening to Scope - while it skips and glitches I find it's not like Oval in mood or execution. It's more composed and deliberate than Oval, also lighter and bubblier. Oval is "accidental lament for human civilization #0D0A" and Takemura is "clowns feeding popcorn to robot elephants"

dont get the Assembler albums unless you're into extremely minimal, extremely repetitive, beatless, morphed, cut click, bleep, bloop, etc. I am and i still dont like either of these albums very much... it just doesnt spark the curosity that this type of music usually does.. imo.
Sign and 10th are good, havent heard the rest.

I will keep an eye out for that. I just read on Discogs that he composed it for a fashion show. The guy gets around.

Listen to track 14, Murmur of the Day, which is straight out of Frank Zappa territory.
