Ok, sorry to any dutch people here, this does not include
you... well, except for one...

actually, the dutch people here can probably answer some
questions... why is it that whenever I see a dutch person
somewhere, they always act like they think I'm going to kill
them or something? Why is it that people suddenly become
super rude to me if I ask them if they can speak english?
SORRY, BUT I FUCKING CAN'T SPEAK DUTCH!!! WHY WOULD I EVEN
ATTEMPT TO LEARN IT, AS A MINISCULE POPULATION IN THE WORLD
SPEAK IT!!!!

so yeah, I've lived in Holland for 5 months of my life, with
only one more to go (thank goodness) and my opinion is that
Dutch people are super rude... I can't wait to get back to
Canada where people are actually civil to each other!

I apologize for this I guess... it has been a stressful day
for me, and I'm in a bad mood... but I do get the feeling
that Dutch people are really rude...

my gf's dutch, she says that yeah, attitudes are completely
different in holland. there's a lot of prejudgement based
on one's status (money, position, power, etc), and people
can come across quite rudely.

never been there myself so no bloody clue personally.

WHY WOULD I EVEN ATTEMPT TO LEARN IT, AS A MINISCULE
POPULATION IN THE WORLD SPEAK IT!!!!

well there's a reason: we dont like that
also it's that people just assume you speak english, like in
france they dont like that either

i though it was the other way around though. like we're all
so proud we speak english very good we like to do that. but
that's changed apparantly then.

we are rude though

well, for a while I was interested to learn Dutch... I was
here before christmas, and for the semester after christmas
I wanted to take a course... they didn't offer it of course,
cause why would they really in Canada, Newfoundland
especially... so I took German, the main reason of which was
because I had been told it was close to Dutch... but why
would I want to learn the language, if the people are going
to be rude to me and treat me like shit... seems pretty
stupid to me...

it is close to dutch, but that's a bad thing - you end up
confused as all fuck :)

yeah, that doesn't exactly win you points. if that's your
attitude why the fuck should we care about being rude to
you?

no, but seriously - this suprises me a bit. I have never
seen this reaction to people who ask this question - and I
get asked it myself (as I work in a bookstore).

I think it's pretty normal and indeed civil of you to ask
whether other people speak your language - it sucks if
people can't react normal to that.

in my personal experience it's mostly Germans and especially
the French that do NOT ask whether you speak their language
but just start prattling on in their language. which is
ofcourse very rude.

well, that's my attitude now because I feel everyone here
treats me like shit... shrug, I don't know, I've been told
it's a completely different culture from Canada, and it
is... so maybe my idea of someone being rude really isn't...
but still, it just has been rubbing me the wrong way for the
last little while, and with this day turning to shit I just
had to get it out of my system!

well i hardly see a reason why you should learn to speak
dutch really, it doesnt help you later on
and if you just ask people wether they can talk to you in
english i dont see why they're not nice really
around here i get spoken to alot in english and i dont mind
but my english is superdupagood of course

Hey, at least they acknowledge your existance. Here, people
don't even look you in the eye. You're either invisible or a
threat. I can be right behind someone who's walking though a
door and they never hold it open!

I've even been cheering and really getting excited about the
Holland run in the European Championships... I've been
making an effort to really enjoy this trip over here, and to
see the sights and experience the culture a little... so
it's not like I'm a stubborn Canadian who expects everyone
to cater to my culture... not at all!

Zoetermeer is one of the most awful places in our country.

I'm totally serious about this. a friend of mine used to
live there and we would go there (his parents were out a lot
of the time) - it would depress the hell out of us within
minutes of leaving the trainstation.

maybe it's just me here... God knows Canada and Holland are
very different... so I'm probably just used to different
things, and interpret things differently...

I lived in the Netherlands for a few months.

The Dutch can be blunt, and sometimes quite culturally
insensitive.

But they are also very hospitable, and as far as I could
tell quite principled.

never heard that dutch people are more rude than other
people of europe. around here nobody would expect you to
talk icelandic and everybody would try and talk english.

but i doubt that EVERYONE you've met have been rude to you.
i guess it has more to do with your attitude. a thing that
is considered rude in canada isn't necessarily rude in
holland.

The Funkmaster: What are the main differences you've met
between dutch and canadian culture? I've always imagined
Canada (haven't been, really wanna go tho) being quite close
to western Europe culturally, sort of like a mix between the
U.S and Scandinavia..McSocial Democracy..
Met a bunch of Cannucks while living in Barcelona, they all
seemed to like it quite a lot there and they were cool
people too..
Eh, Rotterdam isn't Barcelona tho..
