My best mate is in hospital today having one removed
because it has a tumour. Shitty thing is that they have to
remove it to find out if the tumour is cancerous or not, so
it will be cool if it's benign but he'll still be one man
down :/

Anyway, here's a timely reminder to make sure you do the
self exam on a regular basis.

The idea that they have to remove the testicle to check it
puts me right off. Why can't they slice open the scrotum,
take a fluid/tissue sample and then stitch it back up?

"Why does it have to come out? How do they know it's
cancer and why can't they do a biopsy?

Well, they don't necessarily know it's cancer, but
statistics indicate that it is very likely that it is --
then add in the fact that more than 95% of testicular tumors
are malignant. The only way to tell if it is malignant is by
looking at the dissected(!) testicle under a microscope.
They cannot do a biopsy because if it is cancer, they do not
want to risk disturbing or spreading the cancer while it is
still in the body."

I don't believe that is the only way, inserting a needle
directly into the lump and extraction of cells could just as
easily be examined under the microscope. I'd do it myself
rather than let someone cut off a nut!

unless you have some sort of medical degree, I'm going with
the doctors on this one.

thats what a biopsy is....sticking a needle in and getting
tissue.

until I find a good technical explanation why they MUST
remove the WHOLE testicle then I am standing my ground.

I have a huge lmp in my throat(not able to be seen without
touching it) but they did a biopsy to check it out and its
not cancerous-thank god.

But i will continue getting strept throat and feeling throat
pains-go figure :D

How would a biopsy spread the cancer? Seriously I don't
know much about this subject so please enlighten me.

that makes no sense...how could the biopsy spread the
cancer-jesus.

They are simply saying if they fuck with it it may spread.
And maybe it has already spread in his balls so the best
thing to do is get rid of it. He can still live with one
balito

Ok, so I've read a bit more on that site.

They will shine a very bright light through the area to rule
out a cyst.

They will perform an ultrasound FIRST to determine the
chances of the lump being cancerous.

Some doctors claim to be able to remove the cancer without
removing the WHOLE testicle, only part will be removed, but
this may mean that some of the cancer cells are left (bad).
They are more likely to want to do this of you only have
one testicle to start with, but still experts are against
this idea.

I hope everything turns out ok for your friend danbrusca,
hopefully the tumor was not cancerous. Do you know how early
he/they caught it?

I have had that happen, usually when I am in extreme cold
conditions, I always thought it was just a natural
protective thing, certainly nothing to remove it over!

Anyway, I went to visit him today, arriving just in time to
find out he was being discharged. The operation was fine and
although he has to wait up to 4 weeks for a pathology report
on the tumour, the surgeon said he didn't think it looked
cancerous, so fingers crossed everything will be OK.

i read this post yesterday and decided to go look if my
testicles seemed strange and shit, i think there might be a
little lump or something on one of them...i got a massive
blow to the balls shortly before that examination so i'm
hoping it has something to do with that.
