The people who own an iPod, please share you thoughts and experieces on this..
Thanks

yes! buy an ipod, or the iriver mp3 - equally good but less expensive
ive been thinking the same too, i already had a portable player, but its just incredibly .. convenient to have 20 gb of music in your pocket. the iriver plays .ogg files too, better quality than mp3 files.
if you have the cash, get one.

one very important tought: youve got to have either a mac or a pc with firewire capabilities for an ipod. usb2 is supported too but it requires an extra cable to be purchased.

a portable cd/mp3 player has the problem you've to burn your mp3 to cd, wich costs loads of money but you can "store' more then just 20gb in the end

I´ve bought an iPod and never regret it!
it´s like having your own private radio station, everytime I go out and take it with me I hear different songs which I like and noone is talking bulshit between the songs ;)

that is much MUCH cheaper than a mp3 harddisc
cdrs only cost 50-70 €cent or something, you can buy a lot of cds for 400€
but as aesthetics says, having your own radio station and instant acces to all your cd's is great

I don't know about these portable music hard drives. They seem so vulnerable (especially with shocks) and I have my doubts about the total battery lifespan.
I have a 256 MB MP3 player myself and I use rechargeable AAA batteries for it. The thing is small, light and shock-proof. Downside is that you can only fit about 30-35 songs on it (the tracks I have stored on it are often longer than 5 mins and >128 Kbit though). If you intend to use your device during short train/bus trips and such, then there is no need to have 20-60 GB storage, since in such a short period you'll only listen to your favs anyway.

another advantage compared with a portable cd/mp3 player is the size, if the iPod was as big as a cd/mp3 player I would not have bought it
btw, there are many mp3 players available nowadays, it all depends on the amount of storage you want

What was all that shit someone posted a while ago, about the batteries being dead after a year or so and that they were not under warranty, and that a new battery would be mega expensive?
If they do warrant HD failure/dead batteries/broken earphones for so long, then that's indeed a nice bonus, but also a prerequisite IMO for a device that expensive.
Personally I wouldn't spend €400 on a device with mass storage like that if listen to it only for short periods of time.

if you don´t use a battery proper (all batteries) it will die much sooner
just charge and recharge it fully every now and then, don´t charge it when it isn´t empty, and don´t play and charge at the same time

But Li-ion batteries aren't supposed to die out sooner if they are charged when they're not empty yet. That was the beauty of li-ion batteries as opposed to the old fashioned rechargeable batteries.

Oh and if you're waiting for totally non-audio playing features, forget it. Apple have ruled out any PDA/phone/video capabilities in future iPods because they don't see the point. I have to say I agree. It's an audio player for god's sake!

I use a £40 Packard Bell Cd/Mp3 player, this does me fine, one cd holds about 9-11 hours of music and if you use a re-writable cd you can update it everyday with no worries about spending money on cdrs all the time.
The bulk of my mp3 is kept on my hardrive and I just fill the disc from day to day depending on my mood, for shuffle play I find this works better than having your whole collection on tap because things aren't so chaotic (a drill n bass track coming on at 4.00 in the morning for example).
It's fun just to plan out a whole day of music and play the disc from start to finish.
So right now I don't feel the need to get an i-pod though I must admit they look sexy, this is almost as good though and significantly cheaper, with the advantage that you can listen to your newly purchased cds when out shopping.
It takes two AA batteries and I always have four rechargables available which easily last for a whole days worth of travelling.
When used at home you can just plug it into a wall socket and it then acts as a charger for your batteries, sweet.
