AFX Albums I like and Dislike

Steve Wardale on 2002-01-13 21:16 [#00069266]

Drukqs is pretty good, second disc is a bit naff. Richard D
James is very good. ICBYD I heard samples on amazon, and
wasn't very impressed. Classics is really, really bad. I
also wasn't too keen on SAW II. Judging on my current
preferences, what would be sutable future AFX buying
material?

BRIDUV from USA on 2002-01-13 21:21 [#00069267]

if you dont already have the album that showed RDJs
omnipotant, SAW 85-92 ,get it

dug creedy from yelsewhere on 2002-01-13 21:26 [#00069268]

ICBYD and SAW 85-92 reaally do stand up to the RDJ Album.
Buy those two at least.
ICBYD includes 'alberto balsalm', considered in polls at
this board to be the best aphex track ever ( I'm sad because
i counted the votes))
SAW contains heliosphan, the finest of his early works.
forget the rest for now.

you can't judge ICBYD by samples man... you must get it...
that and The RDJ album are my two fav Aphex albums... I find
it hard to pick a better one of the two...

BRIDUV from USA on 2002-01-13 21:41 [#00069273]

RDJ album is undoubtedly beyond criticism it is very hard
to pick a favorite...i have always liked gene wilder though
and that sample of him in WE are the Music Makers still
sends chills up my neck

Kalx from Milwaukee on 2002-01-13 21:44 [#00069276]

All of RDJ's music is unmatched, but "2 remixes by AFX" i
found to be really good...I couldn't take it out of my CD
player for a week.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-13 21:58 [#00069281]

but it only has like 3 tracks on it...

I noticed that Alberto Balsam was the favourite track too.
It seems to be only the favourite among Aphex Twin "Fans".
People who don't like much of his stuff seem to like
windowlicker best.

Anyone else notice this?

bumblefuk on 2002-01-13 22:05 [#00069285]

i don't agree... it seems like the more fairweather Aphex
fan likes the more mellow tracks from ICBYD or "Flim", or
the pseudo- metal "Come 2 Daddy", while more hardcore Aphex
fans like the more extreme RDJ album and HAB2 and SAW2.

zetre on 2002-01-13 22:07 [#00069288]

Try Come to Daddy.
Bumblefuk: I think you´re wrong. I´m a pretty big fan and
I like the mellow stuff the most.

Xanatos from NYC on 2002-01-13 22:17 [#00069296]

I agree with both you guys actually:

it takes the mellow stuff or quasi-hardcore stuff (come to
daddy) to get people into aphex. It doesn't necesarily
CHANGE from their favorite. Alberto Balsalm was my favorite
the first time I ever heard aphex and it still is today.
However I would NOT have gotten into aphex listening to RDJ
album or even the rest of ICBYD. the fairweather fans will
hear those songs and like them and maybe not go deeper into
aphex, the ones who fall in love with it, like me, will have
their horizons expanded...

I don´t think RDJ album is one inch deeper than say
Alberto.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-13 22:39 [#00069313]

I started with The RDJ album, and then ICBYD... and they're
both my favorites still... the thing is though, that The RDJ
album was my very first, and it works on many levels... it's
very enjoyable immediately, but if you want to disect the
music, it stands up to that... the same with ICBYD... so I
started with those, and as time went on I got more and more
into them...

bumblefuk on 2002-01-13 22:49 [#00069324]

i don't mean to imply that ICBYD is bad, but it is closer to
Boards of Canada type stuff, and a lot of the closer to
mainstream fans who might like BoC or old Autechre freak out
at stuff like Windowlicker or Squarepusher, or the last
couple of Autechre records. it also seems that people who
say that ICBYD is Aphex's best also absolutely hate
Ventolin. Ventolin sounds like nothing else before, a
totally creative mindfuck track, maybe only now Venetian
Snares has started to similar stuff.

i just find it hard to believe that anybody who is not a fan
of Aphex and Squarepusher, would even listen to more than a
third of Windowlicker without freaking out, or that they
would be very rare.

Netlon Sentinel from yurp on 2002-01-13 22:50 [#00069325]

i'm guessing you don't like monotonous beats since you're
not into his earlier work, but for god's sake, don't skip
icbyd or sawii!! icbyd has some shitty (imo, ofcourse) songs
like come on you slags on it, but there are instant classics
on that one. and sawii is just complete relaxation. i like
track 13 off the second disc best, reminds me of huge, huge
spaceships.

otherwise download hangable auto bulb for heavy drillnbass.

Netlon Sentinel from yurp on 2002-01-13 22:52 [#00069327]

bumblefuk: you mean freak out in a bad way? as in 'alright,
i'm not listening to this gibberish no more, no way man' ?
cause in that case you're prolly right.
