'minimal' stuff, reich / glass

my love for this genre is accellerating towards infinity at
a steady 3*10^8 m/s²...

skip the bollox. i talk too much trash on here anyway.

the point is, what are similar artists/composers to this?
i like/know glass, reich, nobukazu takemura's less glitchy,
repetetive stuff (sp?)

recommand away!

la monte young

btw i don't think its possible to accelerate towards
infinity, its far more likely you will decelerate, unless of
course, its a negatvie acceleration

to infinity, and beyond!

accellerating at c/s² would require infinite energy, and
raises your mass to infinity in 1 second, thus creating a
singularity where the entire universe will collapse into,
exept for the matter moving away from you at relative speed
c. => the universe will turn into a donut.

the kind of music those artists make, roughly

im thinking for example the song nobukazu takemura -
anemometer, the albums music for 18 musicians, tehilim,
different trains, einstein on the beach, glassworks

that stuff

theres an interesting cd about that i copied off my dad a
while back
nyman's works played by the london saxophonic.
LPs called "an eye for optical theory" i think.
his work sounds really minimal & blippy when it's just
stripped down to different pitch saxes.
the first track could almost be described as pounding.

It's been said before but I'll mention it again here.

Oren Ambarchi - Suspension
Keith Fullerton Whitman - Playthroughs
Pete Nimblock - Hurdy Gurdy and Voice
Stars of the Lid - Avec Laudnium, The Tired Sounds of Stars
of the Lid
Joushua Treble -
Biosphere - New album with french name
Mokira - Mokira (Glichy album but still qualifies as
lowercase minimal)
Some other stuff I can't remember the moment...

here's a big list of philip glass:

koyanisqatsi (fantastic)
powwaqatsi (fantastic)
naqoyqatsi (mediocre)
mishima (fantastic)
the hours (pretty good)
glassworks (fantastic, maybe my favourite glass release)
passages w/ravi shankar (interesting)
kundun (mediocre to good)
einstein on the beach (hardcore)
satyagraha (hardcore)
the photographer (fantastic)
songs from liquid days (almost pop music, a la phil)
1000 airplanes on the roof (lots of synthesisers - maybe a
nice intro to PG for electronica fans)
songs from the trilogy (the best of the operas, and great!)
dracula score (i don't think it's that great tbh)
hydrogen jukebox (probably my other favourite release of
his)

the soundtrack to 'ravenous' was done by michael nyman and
damon albarn, and it is quite exceptional. though not
strictly minimalistic, it sort of is in its repetitiveness.

If you like post-rock, check out some "town and country" and
"fridge". Quite hypnotic, quite minimal, very very good.

Also, if you like the more modern-classical side to
minimalist music, get some terry riley.

Rafael Toral
Phill Niblock
Hafler Trio
Zoviet France
Nurse With Wound... i'm pretty sure mr. virginpusher meant
that by NWW, but just in case that was unclear, i figured
i'd mention again...
Windy and Carl
Joseph Suchy
Six Organs of Admittance
Ekkehard Ehlers
...
hmm well this is a bit tough, because i really haven't heard
a large enough sampling of Reich and Glass to know what you
really mean when you ask for recommendations...

Does Philip Glass even regard himself as minimalist? I don't
think he has for many years. There's an interview from way
back in which he gives some really insightful views as to
why he sees himself this way, but I've since lost track of
it :(

There was a cool thread on here awhile back about Glass'
"Lightning". I really dig that song, bouncy synths and all.
Almost cries out for a happy hardcore beat or even something
moderately pounding a la "Zombie Nation". ;)

Glass has class.

I don't know if I'd put some of the earlier essential
Tangerine Dream compositions under "minimalist" but they are
certainly sparse yet ambient and evolvingly lush in a stark
way.

Yah totally fine JAroen, I never had a problem with the word
"minimalism" myself, just that some artists see themselves
differently. Just a label, ehe :)

Hope you find more music to enjoy! Cheerz.

Stars of the Lid make beautiful music. I was verging on

so mesmerising.

Im obsessed with it too!

its basically all ive listened to this summer.... glass and
reich

john adams is supposed to be a big name, but the 2 works I
got by him just dont sound anything like the minimalism of
glass or reich. i was really let down.

Id also be interested in more names... as Ive been mostly
obsessed with these guys, buying cd after cd.... I need to
expand.

oh, and the solaris soundtrack by cliff martinez is
awesome... It reminds me of some of reichs stuff

I could never find any good names at school... none of my
teachers like minimalism. they all hate philip glass

that was one of my main reasons for dropping my composition
major... because (amoungst other important factors) I didnt
want to have to write music to please them, or write music
that I liked, and have to argue and justify it.

you should try Adams' opera "Nixon in China" - that
certainly has some of the minimalist qualities and it is a
great piece besides.

you could try a Dutch composer too - Louis Andriessen. he
made two opera's with Peter Greenaway and has made loads of
music besides.

although not exactly minimalism, Berio has also done some
great work, more brooding in atmosphere.

Yes definately. I recently purchased Adams' "Road Movies"
Good but "Nixon in China" is way better.
by the way don't buy the new Reich recording (orchestre de
lyon i think) of different trains. it's crap
/me finishes encoding his lovely new Drumming recording
