honestly, if you have any library access, just get out whatever you can... otherwise, i dunno... i'm sure there's a lot of stuff that you don't think you like now, that you might find yourself likeing once you've given it some time... john cage is nice that way

Not to be confused with John Cage the lawyer from Ally McBeal either... seriously, I'm not much into John Cage for enjoyment's sake -- the theory on paper is really cool, and some interesting conceptual stuff. But I'm more of a Glass-drinker than a Cage-holder. ;)
I did like some "Imaginary Landscapes" tho. This page has some nice pointers:

lots of people (including aphex twin) says he was a brillant theorist but most of his trx are shit... that's a bit true but all i can say is his sonatas & interludes are brillant, really strong
(satie meets percussion meets gamelan), incredible in terms of mood, it's like ambient music.
thanx for the link (not access to library anymore, that's how i got into cage...)
i like phil glass too but, a bit like cage, i think his best outputs are wiked but most of his music sounds the same & are not that interesting.

the reason why a lot of people like him theoretically, but don't generally like him musically is that they don't give it time... they read all his theory and then sit down with an album, expecting to like it immediately, not realizing that assimilating this information in one part of your brain won't help you listen... you have to listen till it makes sense... i've been periodically picking up cage albums from my library for years now, and only now am i at a stage where i'm able to enjoy it... i'm not saying he's some empirically enjoyable god... but it doesn't surprise me when all kinds of people say they don't like him...
