There's a really good article at the back of PC ZONE (UK games mag) this month by Rhianna Pratchett that touches on this subject. If your a girl and don't like being treated differently/leched at/harrassed don't admit to being one. Yes, you can whine that you shouldn't have to mask your identity, people should be civil anyway, but given the general endemic misogyny in our society it would be wise to. I find that having a girl's name is useful, people are far more inclined to help you online, give you interviews and information. I am male BTW, I have a girl's name because a welsh painter that I am named after was called "Ceri" and my father (english) had never heard it before. |

Less females on the net due to less female computer owners / game players. The technical aspect draws more males to the net. Women prob have greater social skills / comm abilities & don't need to use as much. Also cultural differences mean more males use than females (what your peers talk about / do, who adverts are aimed at etc, what features in mags aimed at specific genders, your parents...). All above in based on generalisations which naturally can't be applied in total to any one person & allows for excepts. I welcome more females users! My wife(!!) listens to AT & my friend Carol has meet him. BTW my wife used to enter chatrooms as a man & also as a women with a provocatively sex based name just for fun, to see how desparate / stupid / gross guys could get in their postings & private messages & we both used to have a good laugh. Got boring though... |
