Is there any way to use one's own music as a ringtone
(without using that awful monophonic music composer)... I
would love to have one of my nasty numbers to be used as my
ring tone >:)

well, I know some phones have mp3 ring tones... so you could
upload an mp3 of your tune

it's possible to record sounds with some phones and use them
as ringtones. i think some phones have good quality.

a lot of them play midis...

dirty priest: make a midi in floops for example, save it,
upload it and download it with your phone
