Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

typically used to get your IP and DNS server when you
connect to a network, though capable of doing much more
(pointing out the location of kernels, for instance).

For the typical case, basically what happens is your machine
shouts 'help help I need to know how to use this network!'
to everyone in that network, and the DHCP server responds
with the goods.
