Philosophy: for people who need a degree but are completely
talentless.

I majored in philosophy at Harvard med school. They all
thought I was fucking crazy. I would open a patient up then
sit and wonder why I had done it for 38 hours. Then spent a
further 4 weeks thinking about why the patient died while I
was thinking.

Aye, i may well have been. I've just been soured by a bunch
of philosophy-studying twats who are into mescaline, leather

Anyway, i'm going on to do a fine art degree. IS there a
more pointless, bullshit-filled area of study?

Yes I eat corn flakes (or cold sore scabs as we called them
in school) at night all the time.

You see, gentlemen, my question is: does breakfast consist
of a class of foods, or the time that foods are consumed?

neither...it is to do with the ending of any period of
fasting. Hence the name. The period of fasting is entirely
up to the individual.

Ah, but it is assumed that the period of fasting occurs
during sleep, and one breaks the fast when one wakes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it is breakfast
even if you work a night shift and eat at 6 p.m. - unless
you eat lasagne. Because that's just crazy.

Breakfast doesn't really have to follow a period of
sleep...I know tons of people who have brekfast when they
get home from work in the evening as they haven't eaten all
day.

offline hobbes from age on 2004-06-18 16:35 [#01246669]
Points: 8168 Status: Lurker

it still has to do with the "time" you eat it.
being either after sleep, or long periods of fasting...

offline ecnadniarb on 2004-06-18 16:37 [#01246674]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Followup to hobbes: #01246669 | Show recordbag

How do you work that one out? You, yourself, are agreeing
that breakfast can occur at any point of the day, therefore
time becomes an irrelevant factor in the arguement.

offline deepspace9mm from filth on 2004-06-18 16:38 [#01246676]

CRUNCHY NUT CORNFLAKES.

There, sirs, is your answer.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2004-06-18 16:39 [#01246677]
Points: 18042 Status: Lurker

But when you say breakfast people immediately think of eggs
and bacon and cereal and toast eaten in the morning after
waking - that's the most obvious meaning.

The more you argue against the conventional meaning of the
word the less certain it becomes - until people lose the
ability to communicate at all and they pick up rocks and
start beating each other over the head

oh the blood

which is one of my primary arguments against philosophy,
that it is an instrument of obfuscation and confusion rather
than a path to enlightenment.

lee, yes it does in a way, but i guess i dont feel like
going in the details here.
like you said it doesnt matter what time of day. but its
still breakfast time!

if i have to take my pills only after having gone through a
fast. it wont matter what time of day, but there will still
be a certain factor that will be able to tell me : "it's
pill time!"

know the answers. and which questions we should ask.

greek etymology of the word

philo - love
sophia - wisdom

i have an interest in philosophy that is geared toward
happiness / aiding people in their suffering, but not so
much in philosophy that is purely academic / just trying to
be clever :)
