i was thrift store shopping this weekend and i found a
pristine copy of "geogaddi" on CD in the bins. two dollars!
and i can't believe i've never really listened to them
before. i sort of dismissed them as somewhat too mainstream
and slick for me, but i enjoyed listening to this right
away.

two dollars! and i found red red meat's first album too.
i'm so glad we americans have terrible taste in music.

Nice find, nice album, try and get a cheap copy of "Music
Has the Right to Children" which is IMO better, less fillers
and a more coherant listening experience, great when your
wasted.

I recently bought a Marvin Gaye greatest hits thing,
Parliament's "Mothership Connection," and Stevie Wonder's
"Talking Book" for one dollar apiece on vinyl. Flea markets
rule.

I fail to see how you can love MHTRTC but hate Geogaddi.
They're two sides of the same coin.

this topic has been discussed 100000 times before but i
never resist the chance to proudly proclaim that mhartc >
geogaddi

well, i would surely pay full price for music has the right
to children...i must have it soon at any cost. geogaddi is
incredible. i had no idea they were so into
math/science/spirituality. i dig it the most.

listened to it this weekend while doing stuff around the
house. over and over and over again.

Frank Zappa is probably my favorite musician ever.

Anyway, I can see how "Cheap Thrills" could be an annoying
song, but I'm pretty sure Zappa meant it to be that way. He
made that LP "Crusin with Ruben and the Jets" as a parody of
doo-wop and he intentionally made it silly and cliched. I
still think it's fun to listen to, though.

I like Captain Beefheart more - he sounds a bit rougher, not
as slick as Zappa, but still with the same sense of fun and
experimentation.

Oh yeah, Beefheart's great. I'm more familiar with Zappa's
works, though. I don't really like later Zappa stuff much
(post '77 or so) but I think his stuff with the Mothers and
his early solo LPs are absolutely genius. They did work
together a lot, and Zappa recorded Trout Mask Replica, I
think.

i can see that, sure...maybe i've just listened to it too
many times...i really can't stand that piano playing that
"sesame street" style melody. bah. sorry. i mean, other than
that i really dig what i've heard of him, which is only
sheik, we're only in it..., cheap thrills, strictly
commercial. any reccomendations?

We're Only In It For The Money is my favorite album of all
time. His first three records, Freak Out, Absolutely Free,
and We're Only... are amazing. His solo stuff like Hot Rats
is great in a very different way... Over-Nite Sensation is
great too. There's so much variety, it's hard to know where
to point you since I'm not sure what you like about his
stuff.

yes, they did work together on trout mask replica. Don van
Vliet and Zappa knew eachother from high school.

at the recording sessions Beefheart felt very insecure and
thought Zappa didn't have enough respect for him.

Beefheart insisted they record the whole thing again but
this time more under his control.

In the seventies, Beefheart was broke and couldn't record
anything new - Van Vliet had the silly notion to sign every
recordcontract he got offered, which meant he was signed to
about 6 recordcompanies at the same time, all the different
legal stuff completely paralyzing Beefheart - he wasn't
allowed to enter ANY studio.
Zappa then took Beefheart with him on his tour, so he could
at least earn some money and get away from all that shit.

I do like the early Zappa too - it's later on that he gets
too anal and slick.

you know, i'm not so sure yet either. i have to give some
more listens to we're only in it... i was intruigued by the
variety and odd sounds that just come out of nowhere.
