Ok i made the transition from cubase to reason yesterday,
but its a lot more complicated than i imagined. It's going
to take me a month or so to get to grips with it, but
reading through the manual (briefly) i cant for shit see how
to record real audio, i can only see how to record midi. Can
someone please save me some time and give me a quick step by
step for how to record live audio (eg guitar), assume i have
not configured it yet.

You can't, cubase boy!

Seriously though, you need a seperate proggy for that.
Wavelab/Soundforge are my wave recorders/editors of choice.
You then load those into the NN19/NNxt samplers in Reason.

you cant record real audio with reason? Thats fucking shit!!
I have to record my bass as a sample?! And my keyboard as
samples too? That is so ridiculous, you must be joking

Fuck Reason, stay with Cubase.

Or. you could just run Cubase and have Reason as a slave -
should give you best of both worlds ...

I generally use Acid for sequencing, and reason for the
softsynths + certain drum-samples. If you create a
synth-line in reason, export it, put it into acid, and then
record your bass and synth, that should work out nicely. Of
course... since you've got cubase, and not acid, you just do
it with cubase.

Does ableton record live audio?

download acid pro! it's really a great sequencer!

if you want a plain audi-recording program, soundforge (also
by sonic foundry) works pretty good for me.

aww, i want my cubase back. I sold it with my PC when i went
mac. I think ableton live records live audio (the name would
be slightly misleading otherwise), i can maybe use that with
shitty shitty reason together to make a far inferior cubase
substitute.

if you're on a mac, get Logic Audio Platinum for sequencing
and audio-recording! it's tha bomb!

i think im going to just fuck off reason for a few months,
get to grips with ableton and use that for now. I have
deadlines to meet to get tracks in for. I cant be arsed
sitting trying to set up slaves, masters, and bollocky toss
soup.

money is no object.. do you make money off your music?

if you don't make money off it, there is no reason for you
to pay for the tools you use to make your music... (IMO)

ok thats my other problem, i dont have the internet. Or a
phone line for that matter. Im a teacher and im using the
computers at school at the moment, which have all this
filter list rejection shite, so i basically cant download
anything unless its from a webpage that's not filtered out.
Haha, i suck. My mates have broadband, so i can grab stuff
every now and then from their houses. I'll juse use ableton
for now, it will suffice.

hehe.. ok.

I know about the problem.. I only use the internet at work
too.. I have 56k at home, but that just won't cut it no
more.. I also have some friends with adsl, so occasionally
I.. utilize their connection to download stuff...
