i hope it's better than everything else she's done. the
unibrowed crackpot has potential to put out a good album.

It would have to be quite an album to be better than her
previous work. Vespertine and Homogenic are masterpieces.

this is probably my most anticipated album ever, shame she's
not touring though.

they're nice albums. nothing that constitutes a masterpiece
though.

homogenic is nice with the occasional lush streak of
greatness; vespertine is a masterpiece.

...random question here, did bogdan collaberate with her??
and is his stuff on this album?

some good pop songs on it, i agree. otherwise it falls apart
without any real songwriting.

I remember when Homogenic was supposedly named Domestika, or
something like that. Well, I look forward to the new Bjork
album, as well as the imaginative videos that will no doubt
accompany it. (My favorite to date is "Bachelorette".)

i thought it was vespertine that was domestica for a while.
there's a pagan poetry single with the track domestica which
was not on the cd.

i just did a web search and found some references stating
that domestika was the working title for vespertine.

"New album to consist solely of vocals"...

is that really true!? quite a disappointment to me...

"Instruments are so over," says Bjork of her new, purely
vocal album, Medulla, due out late August/early September.
"I think this was probably the most intuitive album I've
done," she continues. "I had to use ingredients that I
trusted, like my voice, my muscles, my bones. I couldn't
really use all the other stuff."

Rahzel of the Roots -- known as "the Human Beatbox" --
supplies the percussive bass line for a majority of the
songs, and the album also features collaborations with Inuit
throat-singer Tanya Tagaq and former Faith No More frontman
Mike Patton. The sound is primitive, full of brooding menace
on "Where Is the Line" and soaring, breathy romance on "The
Pleasure Is All Mine."

Following Medulla's release, Bjork will continue working in
the studio rather than go on tour.

"Every album I've done, the minute that it's done, I feel
really lubricated and, like, 'Wow, now I can write an album
in five minutes,'" she says. "And I just want to find out if
that's just a fantasy or if it's true."

but still... how disappointing... :(

i was looking forward to something sounding like a
development of the sound on vespertine.

i'm scared the album will sound like bobby mcferrin, or
whatever that guy called himself.

much obliged.

the thought of her working with rahzel doesn't really excite
me that much. i don't know why. i'll wait and see what it
sounds like.
maybe my gut reaction to that collaboration is wrong; but i
tend to tire of beatboxing & vocal instrumentation quite
quickly unless it's incredibly well done.
it works wonderfully live, but for repeated home listening?
even someone who's really pushed it forward like jamie
lidell seems somehow limited in his output.
almost as if the process is more important than the final
product.
i'm not sure i like that compromise.

i've always loved the way bjork's voice becomes another
instrument amidst someone elses beats and arrangements.. it
will be interesting to hear how this record turns out.

quite possibly.. but still.. you can be (almost) sure that
bjork will make great things of it!

first of all it won't be happy-reaggae/classical like bobby
mcferrin... it'll probably be more melancholic or naive joy.
Although.. you never know.

definitely pleased that she's expanding her range of
collaborators and her sound further though. i'm not sure
she's an artist who can stand still, or follow a simple
linear evolution.

if you haven't already heard it, here's an interesting
interview with bjork, where she discusses a selection
of her favourite records.

the Maja Ratkje album 'Voice' was made out of her vocal
samples and its an amazing album. Also Ami Yoshida did the
same but thats way more experimental and tracks are only 12
seconds long on average (about 99 tracks i think tracks). It
will be interesting to see how Bjork harnesses this into pop
structures.

i'd say björk is in my top 5 artists of all time and i
would like it to stay that way.

have a look at the track-listing..

hip hop, jazz, orchestral, plaid & natural-world
recordings/experiments with mics by chris watson.

that sounds pretty cool.. i'd be interested to hear that, i
reckon.
that way i'd have a clearer idea of how, as you said, bjork
"harnesses [maja ratkje's sound] into pop structures."

i think i just mean that, although the process behind music
is often interesting (herbert's pccom ethos, prepared piano,
the mecanoid record etc), it shouldn't overshadow the music
itself.

sometimes such a fuss is made over the production techniques
that the music becomes secondary; and no one seems to
realise that the tunes aren't actually THAT good.

i'm sure this won't be the case with bjork, though.
