Kubrick

Jarworski from Wales on 2002-01-11 02:53 [#00068262]

I finally just saw 'Eyes Wide Shut'... I thought it was
fucking great, one of his best...what's ur favourite Stanley
movie?

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-11 03:19 [#00068265]

a clockwork orange, followed by the shining, followed by
full metal jacket. i thought EWS was great and very
under-rated.

good mogwai song: "stanley kubrick" from ep+2 (or ep+6)

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-11 03:37 [#00068267]

My favorit is "The Shinning"
It's the only horror movie that is actually scary in my
opinion.
EWS was good to, but i didn't like the ending.

AMinal from toronto, canada on 2002-01-11 04:20 [#00068282]

2001

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 05:04 [#00068292]

I love The Shining... I don't believe I've seen that many
Kubrick films, that and 2001, and I think that's about it...
both are good, but The Shining kicks ass... I'm a huge
Stephen King fan, and Jack Nicholsen was brilliant in that
movie... hmmm, I still haven't read the book...

Caserol Joe the Chubby from Minneapolis on 2002-01-11 05:54 [#00068303]

I can't say I can place one above the other, but I love
2001, A Clockw..., EWS (yes, highly under rated), Doc
Strangelove (that's kubrick, right? maybe thats my fav),
Shinning. I know I'm missing something.

I also loved Barry Lyndon, which was way to long and slow
for most. It is to me like an ambient film. It's very
mellow and just flows, with beautiful filmming. Another
film I consider ambient in a similar way is Dead Man with
Johnny Depp (not a kubrick film). I recommend it to
everyone.

Clobe Smith from over here on 2002-01-11 08:58 [#00068352]

the egyptian theatre in hollywood just finished with a
2-week run of (a beautiful 70 mm print) 2001. it was the
most incredible thing i have seen on the big screen. they
are also having a kubrick retrospective starting tomorrow, i
think. i definately want to check that out, too.

dead man is great. jim jarmusch is the man, and you can't
go wrong with that cast. johnny depp, crispin glover, heh
heh, billy bob, gabriel byrne. ghost dog was cool too.

borix on 2002-01-11 09:03 [#00068355]

Dr. Stangelove; or how I stopped worrieing and love the
bomb. But love the rest too. He my fave director after Peter
Jackson.

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-11 09:34 [#00068362]

"Stupid fucking whiteman!!!!"
That indian comes back in ghost dog.
Hmm.....i just realised that when you mentioned Ghost Dog
and Jim Jarmush directed them both.
Both are good movies.
I wonder what he is working on now.
Anyone know?

IronLung from Dark Side of the Moon on 2002-01-11 09:37 [#00068364]

Strangelove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-11 09:40 [#00068365]

strrrrrraaaaaangelove, strange lives and strange love,
strrrrrraaaaaange love, that's how my love goes!
strrrraaaaaannnge love, will you give it to me?

Ouakha from the Third Circle of Hell on 2002-01-11 09:44 [#00068368]

2001 : magnificent, brillaint sets & photogrpahy & a great
descent of an AI into madness

The Shining : scary, but they could have picked somone
better (i.e. easier on the eye) to play the wife)

Ghost Dog, another brill movie

Anyone see La Heine, french movie set in urdan ghetto
estates around Paris? one of my favourite movies

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-11 09:55 [#00068372]

I might have seen it but came with a swedish titel wich was
like "as we fall"
It start with a Bob Marley track and fotage from a riot.
It was a brilliant movie abaout three guys from the
gheto....one black guy...one arabian....and a juish guy with
a gun called Vince.
Is it the same?

ken from ken on 2002-01-11 10:06 [#00068374]

balthus from europe on 2002-01-11 10:09 [#00068377]

2001 and Clockwork Orange are my favourites, followed by
Barry Lyndon, Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining.

Ouakha from the Third Circle of Hell on 2002-01-11 10:11 [#00068378]

La Heine = Hate

Jonny G from inside a baby on 2002-01-11 15:36 [#00068443]

La Haine to be exact and it fukin rules all right. That bit
where they're smokin on the roof is cool an yer man sayz "I
feel like im an ant in intergalactic space" heheh i luv
gange

Caserol Joe the Chubby from Minneapolis on 2002-01-11 19:43 [#00068537]

I like the actor who played the wife in the Shining. If you
were watching it for a chance to see some hot vixen then I
don't think you've fully appreciated it. Give another spin.

Sgt Growley from UK on 2002-01-11 21:01 [#00068567]

Clockwork orange is a masterpiece.
Take no notice of what you've heard.
Watch it with an open mind.

Quadrapelegicrobotikev from mp3.com/quadrapelegicrobotik on 2002-01-12 00:47 [#00068613]

PATHS OF GLORY was and is Kubrick at his best.
Check it out...its one depressing adventure.

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-12 00:58 [#00068616]

my favourite kubrick movie is definetly a clockwork orange
and the soundtrack to it is just perfect (i love walter
carlos). i also think the shining is the only scary horror
movie i saw, scary as in really scary. and when i watched
it, it was 3 o'clock in the afternoon and mom was baking
pudding but my knees where still like water!
stanlley kubrick by mogwai is indeed a great song. not
necessarily one of their best but its definitly good.
i saw la haine too, about three years ago. that movie really
did something to me. did you guys see "ma c-té va kraké"
or however they may spell it? its really really greater than
la haine and it has a similar fibre.

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-12 01:04 [#00068618]

"ma c-té va kraké"

I never heard of that one.....?

What do you guys think of Lars Von Trier and the Dogma
movies in general?
I like them...one is called "the party" (i think?) and its
really brilliant.

Caserol Joe the Chubby from Minneapolis on 2002-01-12 05:52 [#00068706]

Dancer in the Dark is my favorite film. I also really loved
Breaking the Waves and Idiots. Those are the only Von Trier
films I've seen. Do you know any of the other directors
from the Dogma group (or whatever they are)?

balthus from europe on 2002-01-12 18:35 [#00068829]

jean-marc barr is another one. his 'lovers' was nice.

balthus from europe on 2002-01-12 18:35 [#00068830]

jean-marc barr is another one. his 'lovers' was nice.

Röyksoppen on 2002-01-13 14:26 [#00069155]

You have "The Party"...that's a great dogme-film. I love
"Dancer In The Dark", can't wait for "Dogville".

bumblefuk on 2002-01-13 15:30 [#00069157]

His films are great, but also tend to be flawed, but you
have to take risks to be great. Even the "lesser" films are
damn interesting if you sit down and give them a chance.
Every image, every sound, has a place in the whole.

Eyes wide shut is really interesting (even with Cruise) but
imperfect, more interesting than the much more hyped
American Beauty, which seemed false to me.

Barry Lyndon is beautiful, another movie in which the lead
actor seems like an odd choice. The climatic scene at the
end with the pistols in the barn is incredible.

2001, where an acid trip takes you to next stage of human
evolution? The use of sound is so cool.

Of course performances by Malcolm Mcdowell and Jack
Nicholson and Lee Ermey are unforgettable as long as you
will live.

BRIDUV from USA on 2002-01-13 15:42 [#00069158]

bumblfuk- whats your opinion on Clockwork Orange?

bumblefuk on 2002-01-13 16:15 [#00069161]

well, your probably being sarcastic, but, A Clockwork Orange
is unquestionably great, goes without saying i think.

Jarworski from Wales on 2002-01-13 16:48 [#00069162]

Glad to see someone else saw the similarity between EWS and
American Beauty. I thought AB was OK, pretty good in places,
but EWS was better.

bumblefuk on 2002-01-13 17:09 [#00069167]

WARNING!
if anybody is thinking of buying Kubrick DVDs', make sure
you get the ones that say DIGITALLY RESTORED AND REMIXED at
the top, because the older, non-restored DVD boxes are
exactly the same except for that line. i think they are
even still the same price, but the quality of some of the
unrestored versions are unbelievably awful, so bad you can't
even believe they sold them at such low quality. The
unrestored The Shining was the worse transfer I've seen to
DVD, really bad.

Xanatos from NYC on 2002-01-13 17:31 [#00069170]

Clockwork Orange is genius. I made a thread all about it
before.

So is 2001.

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-13 17:40 [#00069172]

Im thinking of getting a DVD player soon!
What should i look for in a good DVD player?
Is there any picture quality mesurements i should now
about?

phuchht on 2002-01-13 17:49 [#00069173]

I think your TV pretty much limits the DVD player. DVD is
still cooler than VHS though, even with a smaller TV.

Sido dyas from An Imperial Cruiser on 2002-01-13 17:52 [#00069175]

My mate have a DVD and when theres a dark scene the picture
kind of break up in bigger pixels or something.

Sgt Growley from UK on 2002-01-13 18:40 [#00069194]

Get a DVD drive for your pc, with a video out to the tv.
In a year's time you'll be able to by a dvd recorder drive
for £200 and make your own copies

Jarworski from Wales on 2002-01-13 20:03 [#00069240]

You don't actually need a DVD writer, there is a program
which enables your regular cd writer to do it... takes like
10 hours to set up, but it's worth it... I had it on a PC
Essentials cover disk...

Sgt Growley from UK on 2002-01-13 20:12 [#00069244]

Wow, that's cool! I wonder if the quality is the same or if
it uses some kind of ultra-compression?
<:@)

Jarworski from Wales on 2002-01-13 20:14 [#00069245]

I haven't a clue, I might set it up next week, but at the
moment I can't be arsed, I've got a stack of DVDs to watch
as it is :o.

zetre on 2002-01-13 22:45 [#00069318]

It (Festen) is called The Celebration and not The Party in
English. It´s really one of the strongest films I´ve ever
seen, a lot better than The Idiots IMO. It seemed more
sincere to me..
La Haine is very good as well, a lot less cliche than most
american "ghetto films"..
