Okay perhaps that's a bit of a harsh statement but I just don't get it. I mean at all. Fucking RJD2, DJ Shadow and the rest of this genre is so hurting. Boring with a capital fucking B.
To me, the beauty of hip hop is a sick MC flowing over a dope beat. Hip hop needs both elements to work IMHO.
Anyone with me?

Generally 'a sick MC flowing over it' is what makes me dislike hip-hop. And that's probably why I think most instrumental hiphop is boring, and there are only a few that I like, such as Prefuse 73, Autechre (HAH!), uh,

No doubt. :)
But honestly when I hang out with friends and they put that shit on, it makes me want to give up on music altogether. I wonder if my friends think Autechre is this trite.

Well I kind of agree about DJ Shadow, he's had his day, I only liked two tracks off his last album, but there's still loads of good stuff out there, surely anyone who uses a sampled breakbeat is dealing with hip-hop in some way and isn't that nearly everyone?

i don't know...it's hard for me to take the rhymes out of hip-hop...afrika bambaataa, run-dmc, the various garage and house movements...all of that stuff is so vocal-driven and forms the basis of hip-hop.

is it only me who considers a large portion of Boards of Canada's work to be instrumental hip-hop? i'm surprised their name hasn't come up yet in this discussion. i find that nearly every song they do that features beats, features very hip-hop'esque beats. do you find BOC boring? i certainly don't. they is my favorites.

its pretty bold to say you don't like *all* instrumental hiphop. theres a pretty huge variety. and really...on an "idm" board, you're talking to the exact audience who is into instrumental stuff. its kind of like going onto a board for mcs and saying "i wish all them mcs would shut up!!".
IMO theres good and bad of everything.

depends on how touchy you are about categorizations. a track with the vocals taken out is called an instrumental. a hiphop track with the vocals taken out is reasonably called instrumental hiphop. its not like its a big deal.
tracks that have a hiphop feel but never had vocals gat labeled the same way. i think its fine. its not like its a dis to hiphop any more than alot of (fill in the style you hate) hiphop is a dis to hiphop. its still part of a *very* big culture.
not to mention that instrumentals are a dj's best friend...if you're bored by listening to the instrumental, cut that shit up!
