SAW1 is shite!

grinningcat from london UK on 2002-01-10 21:26 [#00068198]

hmm that got you attention....

not but really its not all that good i think. I much prefer
his newer stuff with jilted drum beats, rather than SAW1
which uses the same old 303's and 808/909 sounds. It may
have been cutting edge at the time, but i think if you
listen to it for the first time these days, it sounds a
little dated. Maybe its coz i have bought all his stuff in
reverse order (Drukqs, RDJ, SAW2, SAW1, soon the Come to
Daddy EP)

so i dont think this would be the best introduction to have
to aphex twin, as this website reckons. I think the RDJ
album is much more innovative and inspiring, and still
sounds very very fresh. dont ya think?!??!!?

saw1 does have its good tracks though, like i cant get
Heliospan out of my head.

I think it's a great album, not over rated at all. :)

But, i do agree with one thing. It's not the best
introduction to him, i'd say Richard D. Album is the best
introduction
to him. It's definately his most accesable album.

lol you guys are too harsh, selected ambient works 85-92.
some were made when he was 14! calm the hell down! its
really good, give it a chance

Chris Ochre from www.electronicscene.com/ochre on 2002-01-11 01:34 [#00068239]

Yeah, it is very old, and sounds it. Nice tunes, dated
sounds. I don't think I'll buy it.

i love SAW1. great stuff.

but about good aphex starters, i'll tell you what is a BAD
introduction for someone: DRUKQS. why? because it's AMAZING.
i bought my girlfriend that album first (all she had was
SAW2 so basically she had no idea about RDJ's non-ambient
music, outside of the few songs i've played on my show which
she's liked) and she loves it to death. she thinks it's
incredible, from the piano(-esque) tracks to the "break your
fucking neck" tracks. i got her the come to daddy ep after
that cos i saw it for like $10 new and guess what? yawn. his
other music is a let-down compared to drukqs. so the moral
of this story is to get SAW1, the RDJ album, or come to
daddy FIRST, then aphex's crowning masterpiece, drukqs.
thank you.

Quoth from Lincoln on 2002-01-11 03:51 [#00068272]

I agree w/ titsworth courier :)

erm... simply because the tracks, imho, are beautiful... and
for someone to be making them when they're 14 years old is
whack! That's an amazing quality that doesn't come around to
people quite so often as the "typical" drill'n'bass movement
nowadays.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 05:13 [#00068299]

plus Heliosphan, Xtal, and Tha are each brilliant... the cd
is worth it just for those tracks...

jand from Chelmsford, UK on 2002-01-11 06:09 [#00068307]

For the best education in what's been cutting edge in music
over the last decade simply listen to the Twin releases in
date order...

It's all about development...

SAWI was in my walkman for a year non-stop....Tha is my fave
ever Aphex track (especially at half speed)...

Archrival on 2002-01-11 07:28 [#00068321]

I must agree with titsworth_courier..its dangerous to reveal
such a devestating weapon as DrukQs that early (it could be
too mindblowing).

Archrival on 2002-01-11 07:29 [#00068323]

The best introduction would be a selfmade compilation of
tracks..he got so many styles on every ablum.

Archrival on 2002-01-11 07:30 [#00068324]

ohh back to the subject...SAW1 = A Classic.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2002-01-11 07:40 [#00068328]

So I'm not the only one that thinks Drukqs is a mind blowing
masterpiece, sweet!

about him being 14 when he made it... i wouldn't take it
literally. Maybe he made some of the synth sounds or drum
patterns when he was 14, or some of the synths he uses later
on SAW...

after all, rich talks out of his ass.

but hmm i still think it sounds dated now, as soooo many
people have used those sounds, ya know. but it IS good.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 18:09 [#00068495]

he talks out of his ass huh? Sure that's a talent in itself
that deserves praise...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 18:14 [#00068496]

do you people seriously think Drukqs is his crowning
acheivement? Like come on... sure it's really good, but it's
not that good...

Aktium from bat country on 2002-01-11 19:26 [#00068521]

one word "tha" if it wasn't for that song i'd be a totally
different person

nene on 2002-01-11 19:28 [#00068525]

yeah, it reminds me of people who think the white album is
the beatles' best album. it's got too much filler/sub-par
material, plus it's not terribly original.

Go Drukqs! Go Drukqs!

SAWI is okay, but I hardly ever listen to it. Kind of a
waste of money, in my opinion. =D

I don't like it very much, but I don't think it's shit.
There are at least 4 or 5 tracks that I do like on it.

Blasphemy! SAW 85-92 is his most consistent, best work.
And Drukqs is good, but christ, it ain't his best album.

Are you all mad, or just retarded?
SAW Vol.1, is one the the greatest electronic albums of all
time. "not terribly original" - WHAT?!! It was
ground-breaking! Aphex was/is so ahead of the times! Just
check out ANY electronic music magazines list of top albums
ever, and SAW1 will be on it! It's my fave RDJ release, and
will always hold a special place in my heart and in history.

SAW1 does sound dated, but it only adds to the whole
experience, for me anyway. Nice and retro... it's so foreign
compared to the stuff he does now. And brilliant in its own
way... the sounds are dated but the songs are not.
