Sell me BoC?

I own MHTRTC and have listened to it a couple of times. To
me most tracks sound too similar. Am I missing something?
They seem to be mentioned a lot here and I'm not that into
them. Do I need to give them more of a chance?

They are lovely and warm...they infect your brain and
overload your senses, they make the beauty of nature stand
out...they are everything and yet nothing at the same
time...a catalyst for nostalgia...they are...quite
simply...awesome.

partially - they use similar moog's and synth sound, which
for some is like they original known sound you could
reckognize , for some ppl ( like me ) its quite boring to
hear all the same synth sounds....well, maybe not exactly
the same, but very very similar.

but they are quite cool, yeah.

That's part of the charm...I don't think it is really active
listening material...as in you want to listen to music so
you listen to MHTRTC, it is more like ambient music for when
you want to chill or something.

my gf lent geogaddi to a friend of hers at work who soon
returned it saying it was horrible, frightening, and like
women being raped.

If I would have found out a lush and unique sound like that
I wouldn't change it either. At that, I'm very happy that
they think the same way.

a) you don't have a girlfriend
b) if you did she probably wouldn't have any friends
c) if you did and she had a friend they wouldn't refer
Geogaddi being like women being raped because it's just
about 80% boring and shit...and everyone knows rape is fun.

some people would criticize bob marley for putting out a
reggae record. others would be amazed that he's still
recording.

people are always looking to justify their likes and
dislikes. if you like it, it won't sound samey; it's just
more of what you like.

Its all about the nostalgia...

Their music is more about texture than rhythm or melody.
Just listen to the old degraded kinda sound they have, it
will get under your skin :)

Hmmm, i might get some flack for this but i think that
geogaddi is the best electronica album out there.

To some people it may sound boring but this is my point, i
listened to geogaddi at least once a day for about 7 months
and every time it never got boring and it still hasn't.

Oh and go to the shop and buy some of the records and LISTEN
to them.

And i think also think they are actually alot more talented
than most electronica artists as they can play instrements
as well.

boc are good

I ve got 6 cds by them (the two albums and the 4 eps that
are normally available)

everything they do sounds nice... but its also very much the
same everytime

they are good, but they need to evolve a little in what they
do

What is wrong with just writing good music? Four tet's sound
hasn't changed that much over his three albums i actually
finding hearing album of all good stuff alot better than
say, a dsp wankfest which is what everybody seems to dig
now.

"selling" BoC:

Boards of Canada to me is all about unrivaled, unearthly and
deeply emotional sounds and melodies which deservedly earned
them their very own little niche in electronical musicland
because there's simply nothing else like it.Granted, there
are quite a few tracks that aren't that great at all (mostly
the shorts imo), but when every release has at least 3 or 4
huge instant classics, like their releases have, the not so
great tracks are easily forgiven and you'll come to
understand they deserve all of the attention and respect and
then some. Let's face it, RDJ also released a large number
of awful tracks, but he's still deservedly respected because
inbetween all that foulness are some downright gems and
perfect releases, and for exactly those pieces he is loved
and remembered. I agree he's bigger than BoC, because he
redefined the ambient genre and brought new styles and
techniques that spawned a large number of copycats. He has
his own unique soundcore and style that makes for instant
recognition, just like BoC has theirs, which, unlike popular
thought, is anything but an easy feat to achieve.

Alot of people on this board decry repetition and demand
change, nothing wrong with that. However, I for one also
like to linger in certain forms of repetition,i.e. the kind
that BoC offers, because when there is a quality repeating
melody that's being expanded upon by additional sounds that
add perfectly to the melody, it allows for one's mind to
really submerge into the song's atmosphere, to settle into
the particular mood of the song and stay there for a while.
It's not like they just make a simple loop, throw in a beat,
repeat it for 7 minutes without adding anything to it and
call it a day, though sadly some people do indeed seem to
think that's all there is to BoC.

So if, on the other hand, you're a sworn lover of
experimental technical marvels and other types of wanton
jibberish, it is most likely you'll not find anything of
interest in their music.
It's a take it or leave it p

they dont have to change... but they can evolve with their
sound... what they do is good, but too mmuch the same... any
ot their tracks could be in any of their releases.... I
think they should investigate a little on how to manage
those incredibly warm textures with other sources

BOC for me is half nostagia of my childhood, half
vaguely-spacy idm stuff that's accessible for all. Is it
repetitive ? Yes. So is lotsa music anyway.

Hope it gets into your feelings like it does for me, that's
all I can say ;)

they have a strange timeless quality
i highly recommend listening on headphones when out on a
country walk, their music doesn't make much sense at a
computer or if you're sitting in your room.

incidentally has anyone seen the BBC cartoon monkey dust?
they use a lot of BOC and it works really well, although
they use it to soundtrack urban decay rather than rural
scenes, it really brings out the eerieness and despair tho

i don't think it all sounds the same on mhtrtc at all. then
again i'm a hug BoC fan. i find that they're one of those
groups that some people just 'get' and some people just
'don't get'. i don't know why. some people just have an
appreciation for what they do i guess..
