I recenly got some tortoise mp3's off modex (TNT I beleive
the albums called) and I'm astonished a how beautiful the
music is, I've never really heard guitars do this sort of
music before, it's absolutely amazing, to anyone that hasn't
heard tortoise before the only way I could explain it is
that it sound (to me at least) like a mix between pink floyd
and telefon tel aviv, even people who dislike music made
with real instruments should check this out, it's just plain
fucking amazing

I think they got a bit stagnant on the newer album, but I
agree that their older stuff is just about all gold. And I
like(d) each successive album more than the last, Standards
being the apex. The xylophone adds a ton of flavor, so
characteristic.

Ever hear Sea and Cake? John McEntire (drummy) is a member.
Some lush sound to be had there.

TNT's production isn't that good, a bit flat.

"Millions now living will never die" - THAT'S the ticket!

i think standards is my favourite, but in my experience, any
tortoise album that i have sat down and listened to more
than a few times i end up enjoying... even the new one is
pretty decent--the first two songs are boring but after that
it's as stellar as they've ever been, for the most part...

I love Tortoise.

I like the new album, apart from the last track. 3 & 5 are
probably my favorites there. Also really like Standards and
TNT. Solid stuff.

Alex: I can see what you mean, but I like the way that album
sounds. :)

Their first record was just kinda boring to me for the most
part.

I think the Japanese bonus tracks on Millions Now Living are
my favorites. The opening guitar for "Gamera" is so nice.
Track 2 on there has some lovely guitar/drum work as well.

Tortoise is great. I saw them in 2001 when they were
promoting Standards, which is an amazing LP. I was going to
go see them again last night with my buddies but I had to
work :(. I really like the new album though.. my roomie
works at the campus radio station and gave me the promo he
got. The first four tracks practically bring me to tears. I
was wayyy impressed.
I don't have much of the early stuff.. but I recall TNT
being first rate also.

could anyone recommend a good starting album??

Start with standards, then TNT, then millions, then the new
one, then by then you may have brought a real tortoise, just
because it is a tortoise and that is the most fantastic
thing ever.

You may buy a terrapin though, but I can't blame you, close.

there's generally 2 types of tortise fans ... those that
love/started with standards and those that love millions now
living... the most. its mostly an age thing i think.., but
the records are different. I've seen them live more than any
other band/act, they put on really energetic and musically
interesting shows.

my opinion.. standards is the worst album (relatively
speaking of course) ;] millions now living.. is easily the
most accessible and influential album. there were some
twidlings with the style on the S/T and some vinyl, but the
sound really took off on millions, therefor its got that
energy of a new sound. With TNT and standards they changed
the way they recorded and wrote songs and took more of an
improvisational approach, with It's all around you (the
newest one) they went back to an approach similar to
milions. Anyways.. I really like the new album. Only song i
skip is #3.

If you like the guitar you should check out Brokeback's
releases, thats all it is. You should also checkout the
first 5ive Style release, and the Sea and Cake ep 'two
gentlemen'.

I like "Standards" a lot, I hated it when I first heard it
because I thought that Warp had hijacked another great band
(again) and it sounded a mess, it ended up becoming one of
my favourite albums of the year though, it has about 5
really decent tracks on it.

i have Millions Now Living Will Never Die.

it's ok but i'm not that fond of it, i must have listened to
it... three times maybe, only one in its entirety. i should
give it more chances since people seem to think it's
genius.

maybe i'm having too much music and i should spend more time
on each release, though most of the time now i like
"difficult" releases already more on 2nd or 3rd listen... or
maybe Tortoise is just not my thing, it would kinda reassure
me in fact to dislike something - sometimes i feel like i
can like anything "experimental" or "difficult" if i listen
to it enough times, even if it's just a retard smashing his
head against tin cans at random accompanied with another
retard making pig noises backwards.

ok, Tortoise is not experimental really.
maybe it's more of that intellectual-trying-to-be-emotional
or emotional-trying-to-be-intellectual soft stuff, à la
Boasdforhf ofi fsoinada.

oh well, i'm playing nothing right now so i'll try it again
: )

i think all their albums are great

and if you want more guitar-based stuff you could check Jeff
Parker's solo output, e.g. here
