Who beats AFX??

kryocera3 from Dallas,Texas (Plano) on 2002-01-10 00:54 [#00067890]

Is there any electronic artist better than Aphex Twin?

I havent found one if there is.
heck, he beats the hell out of most artists in any genre.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2002-01-10 01:49 [#00067900]

He doesn't beat the Beatles, that's a given.

Squarepusher... I think he's on AFX's level, but my opinion
sways constantly... I may prefer one to the other depending
on the day.

Quoth from Lincoln on 2002-01-10 02:13 [#00067902]

Ophecks:

The Beatles & AFX don't even compete on the same wave
length. Yes, of course the Beatles fucking rule... but we're
talking about "ELECTRONIC MUSIC"... not Classic rock that's
timeless.

Squarepusher is close but very very different.

bumblefuk on 2002-01-10 02:27 [#00067903]

Ike Turner

Xanatos from NYC on 2002-01-10 02:34 [#00067904]

noone.

Jarworski from Wales on 2002-01-10 02:45 [#00067905]

Whistlin' Davey Wilson, whose sole composition 'Hold My Hand
Very Tightly' was on the b-side of a demo cassette given
away with Zzapp! magazine (remember that, Speccy/C64
users?). Goddamn, that fucking song ruled my life when I was
young...

PostModernVancouver from Downtown Vancouver on 2002-01-10 05:34 [#00067933]

Aphex is the greatest , most relevant musician walking the
planet today.
He's David Bowie's illigitemate son...Bowie is tuly the most
important musician of the past 30 years by far.
Bowie and Aphex =GOD

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-10 07:15 [#00067949]

postmodernvancouver : i agree.

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-10 08:09 [#00067953]

excluding afx's remix of GLASS's version of a bowie song, i
think a real collaboration between bowie and afx would suck,
honestly. maybe a remix would go ok but a collabo wouldn't
work out. too different.

bowie's been talking for years about a bowie/eno/reznor
album tho. yum.

as for squarepusher, i love the guy but let's be real for a
minute, those albums he released in 1999 had quite a bit of
filler. i'd even say a lot of it is boring. how many aphex
twin albums are boring or have filler? i think richie's
track record is exponentially better than tommy boy's, even
if some squarepusher songs are more interesting than aphex
twin's.

Archrival on 2002-01-10 08:48 [#00067960]

No one fucks with Aphex Twin when it comes to electronic
music and thats it.

awt on 2002-01-10 09:01 [#00067966]

well aphex is a electro king.
You can find loads of varios artist doing their 5min song
and build it like
intro,blabla,chorus,blabla,bridge,chorus,outro. but Aphex
goes beyond.
Great variations lasts. Not boring. Maby a nice melody but
why not fuck it up a little bit, just for fun ya know.

thats aphex and nothing goes beynd that.
yeeah

KRAFTWERK

Amåm from Inner space on 2002-01-10 10:16 [#00067978]

Well, excuse me good sirs, but when it gets down to the
cutting edge of electronic music there are NONE greater than
the incomparable Autechre!
Aphex is good. Very good. In fact, extremely good. But as he
is more of an entertainer and jester of our nightmares, he
is always a few steps behind the digital scientists and
semi-gods called Autechre. There lies the cutting and
painfully sharp egde.

Make love, not babies.

max from udine on 2002-01-10 10:31 [#00067984]

future sound of london

waveman on 2002-01-10 10:45 [#00067988]

sometimes i'd rather listen to Rob Hubbard's stuff (for
example Sanxion, Delta, Commando)
in case you don't know the him, he was No.1 at making tunes
for C64 games. sounds like its the type of thing that would
have inspired AFX.

/-T|K|R-\ from (.|.) on 2002-01-10 12:08 [#00068004]

The orb? well they don't beat him but they mos def are cool.
Well pre 93

marble from madness on 2002-01-10 12:30 [#00068010]

If you view on the technical point there´s no one else than
autechre !

That´s my point.

Their songs are much more complex structured.

No doubt about it.

Their music is like mathmatic.

But in the end I like Richards music much more

He´s the one that blows me really away.

Don´t wanna say much about it.

His music speaks for it / him self.

Music don´t has to be more technical to be the best.

Think about it.

Chrispy from UK on 2002-01-10 13:06 [#00068022]

waveman: Yea... I've got loads of Rob hubbard stuff....
Nemesis the Warlock has always been my favourite.

Have you heard O2's remixes of C64 songs? They're fucking
great!!!

Laserbeak on 2002-01-10 13:41 [#00068030]

MATMOS beats AFX in the creative sounds department (breaking
bones, static electricity pads, crushed snow percussion,
etc). Claude Dubussy very easily beats his piano tracks.
Biosphere's Substrata beats his ambient albums. AFX still
remains at the top at what he does best. IMHO.

Vix Vapourub aka Maximus Volumus aka Li\\\\\\\\\\\ on 2002-01-10 14:10 [#00068038]

Beastie Boys. You can't beat a good multi-genre artist.

Vix Vapourub aka Maximus Volumus aka Li\\\\\\\\\\\ on 2002-01-10 14:13 [#00068039]

Oh electronic artist? In case none that i have heard.

revpersona on 2002-01-10 14:36 [#00068046]

Kind of a lame question. I personally prefer Orbital, since
they're my favorite electronica act out there.

Resident Evil from Australia on 2002-01-10 14:39 [#00068048]

There could only be one person to "beat" Richard. If he was
cloned :-)

Then I guess it would be called an Aphex Twin =D

IMHO no one is better than Richard.

aperson on 2002-01-10 16:38 [#00068079]

Autechre

let me say it again

autechre...

They beat aphex in every manner.

hevquip from 45 angry wasps throats on 2002-01-10 17:11 [#00068093]

fack...people say autechre beat aphex twin just because
autechre make songs more complex than aphex. i could do the
same if i threw in a bunch of sounds and effects. i love
autechre lots, though.

/-T|K|R-\ from the start on 2002-01-10 18:26 [#00068118]

http://www.zen.co.uk/skam/
this is cool

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-10 23:34 [#00068221]

i think people saying autechre are better than richard d.
james are forgetting the history factor of their music and a
whole lot of other stuff. and their tracks arent more
complex, sometimes they may be more deconstructed but the
fibre of it isnt more complex. aphex twin is the best
electronic/sonically chanlenging artist out there, in my
opinion.

kryocera3 from Dallas,Texas (Plano) on 2002-01-11 00:16 [#00068225]

And on the note of complexity, if you listen to drukqs
carefully, it is a fucking masterpiece (primarily the faster
tracks). Not even autechre can shape sound as Aphex can (or
at least of what i have heard, and I have heard a lot). And
while listening to tracks on drukqs there is virtually no
repetition, in reference to his fast pieces.

I do appreciate autechre though very much for what they do
as well. As for squarepusher, from what I have heard he is
close to the raw creativity but still lacks the pure ability
of Aphex Twin to mold every concievable sound into music.

There are a couple of really interesting mu-ziq tracks as
well. I like his individual sound.

One artist I am interested in learning more about is that
Flashbulb guy. You know, the supposed person behind
Finnelbuk or whatever. I found that quite different.

here's a question: why do people like DJ Shadow so much, i
saw his name appear some other posts. Like most DJs, it was
just repetitive. But I suppose I shouldnt hold djs to the
ranks of electronic artists such as Aphex twin.

I will check out those other artists mentioned above in this
post, thanks for the suggestions. I enjoy hearing original
music. And cant understand people who like crappy music.

But as of now, Aphex is still King!

kryocera3 from Dallas,Texas (Plano) on 2002-01-11 00:18 [#00068226]

o, by the way, i really appreciate orbital's work as well.
Especially InSides.

kryocera3 from Dallas,Texas (Plano) on 2002-01-11 00:22 [#00068228]

besides electronic music, does anyone else enjoy the work of
Frank Zappa or Chich Corea. Those are some creative mother
fuckers, very parallel to the creativity and originality of
Aphex Twin.

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-11 00:46 [#00068233]

whoever mentioned the future sound of london, they sure are
excellent. they are the second electronic act i got to like
and they surely are special, to me at least. i really adore
the latest "dead cities" and all of their albums are
interesting. but i think their sounds arent as diversed as
other electronic artists out there.

spasticmatt from mp3.com/spasticmatt on 2002-01-11 01:39 [#00068241]

honestly,i think underworld....its amazing how for a dance
group(face it,thats what they are),theyve gotten respect
from the underground as well as breaking into the
mainstream, plus their ear for melody and broken up vocals is
brilliance...sure mebbe they arent complex, but ill i need is
a good listen....

ps-THEYRE FUCKIN HAPPY AS HELL!!

spasticmatt from mp3.com/spasticmatt on 2002-01-11 01:40 [#00068242]

oh yeah, fsol definately deserve a mention too...bridging the
gap between organics and electronics.

gnobesav on 2002-01-11 01:45 [#00068244]

Amon Tobin is really great too, but more in a
bossa-nova/jazz direction than afx.

Ross on 2002-01-11 02:00 [#00068245]

umbriel, you post here now? are you the same one from
atforumz? this is ross..

acyl18 from west haven on 2002-01-11 02:41 [#00068259]

yah, Underworld is great- have some deep maturinty going on
on their shit... they don't take very many chances, though,
do they. I fucking LOVE Thievery Corporation, tho (they
also don't take chances, but they're just so fucking GOOD)

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2002-01-11 03:37 [#00068268]

because dj shadow is the most creative sonic alchemist ever.
listen to his debut lp "endtroducing." the entire thing is
made up of samples. not only are the songs he samples
obscure (practically unknown to anyone BUT him) but the way
he uses samples is revolutionary. he'll builds totally
original songs out of samples from dozens and dozens of
songs from very disparate genres, from jazz to funk to
hip-hop to techno to pop. he has the most amazing sense of
rhythm and melody. he would have to to have that kind of
vision in his mind, how he could create a whole 3-15 minute
masterpiece out of a song from 50 different songs he has on
vinyl. he's a true musical genius on the level of aphex
twin. his music is totally different but equally
interesting. recommended if you like chilled out music and
creative hip-hop (minus the rapping).

muir on 2002-01-11 04:23 [#00068284]

i would have to say autechre, squarepusher, and mu-ziq all
get pretty close but i wouldnt put any one artist above any
other one. richard certainly has great things about his
music but all of the artists mentioned by me or other people
have something to offer. richard has a history that shadows
others of course. putting out his first record when he was
16 i believe? i dont know who else can say that. but
still...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 04:51 [#00068288]

I suppose Autechre can have an emotional effect on the
listener even though they do sound very mechanical... I know
I personally find Chiastic SLide very beautiful... it's not
all having to do with complexity and all that, their music
is really good...

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-11 04:56 [#00068290]

not that I necessarily think they're better then Aphex Twin,
cause I really don't know... they're both good...

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-11 22:43 [#00068583]

ross : yes! i am on atforumz too! im sorry but i dont
remember who you are. are you ross there too? hello :)

Ross on 2002-01-11 22:57 [#00068588]

Heh, umbriel i'm snorb v. 3 :)

umbriel from quebec...the old on 2002-01-11 23:38 [#00068597]

!!!!! hello.......i dont know how to react. lets just say
that i am happy to know you are here too!

dave from canada on 2002-01-12 00:13 [#00068603]

how about squarepusher

Ross on 2002-01-12 01:09 [#00068620]

thanks umbriel! same to you

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2002-01-12 03:53 [#00068656]

personally I think that Aphex Twin, Polygon Window, and hell
even Caustic Window kicks the crap outta AFX... AFX sucks
ass!!!!

Minion from blazed on 2002-01-12 04:07 [#00068666]

KRAFTWERK obviously,
Anthony Rother kicks ass

Caserol Joe the Chubby from Minneapolis on 2002-01-12 05:44 [#00068699]

Regarding Ae, I think they are not to be compared. Saying
one beats the other is like saying Micheal Jordan is better
than (insert top athlete of a different sport here). No one
beats Aphex at what he does and same goes for Autechre.
