in this interview, mike patton talks about his
long-rumored about Peeping Tom project and he says some
interesting things:

"...instead of working with a band, I kind of played
everything and then gave my tracks to different producers.
so now i'm just waiting to get them back. But it's like, in
ways it's more complicated than working with a band...
You're talking about ten different people I've given it out
to... a guy in Canada, a guy in England... They're all
electronic-kinda stuff cause that's the vibe of the record.
I wanted to work with programmers and guys that are good
with drum machines... Massive Attack are doing one..."

hmm... electronica guys in Canada and England are producing
his album... i wonder who they are?

according to patton, he's worked out the legal problems and
it's finally going to happen sometime in the near future.
but this is the record that's been in the works for like
four years or so.

i'm dying to know who he has asked to program the beats on
his album!

that's a good point. kid 606 or end would be the obvious
choices since they're on his label... he's also worked with
dan the automator. those are the most likely, i'd say.

still, i'm dreaming of the aphex vs patton track :)

Possibly over-cynical at times but stubbornly single minded
and possesive of at least some integrity. Time to balance
the experimental with the musicality some more, I think.

nothing personal, but in general i disagree with the ideas
that an artist can be too "experimental" and that
experimentation is somehow the opposite of "musicality". if
anything, i think that more experimental artists are doing
much more interesting and important work than the people who
are creating music that's the same old stuff just because
it's more pallatable.

I think Patton isn't fully utilising his talents basically.
The Tomahawk albums, aside from one or two inspired moments,
were pretty underwhelming for me and I'd like to see him
push himself harder in that direction. His other projects
pretty much cover the other ground he wants to take and I
think Patton is more interesting when he has some sort of
agenda to adhere to because he challenges the ideas of
what's expected of him but still compliments the music. I
don't feel this way about artists in general more
specifically in this case.

he's been in so many completely different projects and has
done so many different things with his songwriting, his
voice and instrumentation, i'm surprised you'd say he isn't
utilizing his talents enough. it's fine if you don't like
tomahawk or whatever, but... i'm not even sure i understand
what you mean...

i don't think it's fair to lump everything else besides
tomahawk into an "other" category... fantomas, lovage,
maldoror, mr bungle, etc - they're all radically different
types of music.
