a bit of a teenage 'whoa' movie, but a good one nonetheless.
the soundtrack is great!

he's making another movie out now/soon, called 'bubble boy'
i think?

I used to love this movie. I haven't watch it in a long
time, though I bet if I did my love would rekindle. I refuse
to watch the new versions with the new dubbing.

tell your friends they are dolts. this film is a
masterpiece. but yeah most people watch it and think its
rubbish cos they don't get it. yeah its bloody confusing,
but it does make sense if you follow carefully. good shit.

ghost in the shell is also cool

nice movie fo sho...the ending was a bit sik imo, when akira
starts to become all muscular an horrible.
the script is written very good and i didn't find it boring
for some reason.

i think the end is one of the strongest parts...a vision of
both internal collapse (tetsuo's loss of control) and and
external cataclysm.

yeah same thought here cycling...they really showed that in
tune so to speak.
but it's fuckin' trippy, cos i didn't watch the movie from
the start, but half an hour later.
so i didn't catch up what did the 3 lil white childs
represented?

The image of the girl being crushed in Tetsuo's giant
hideous body will always stick with me. Great movie, a mind
bender.

---SPOILER---

the children each have the akira power to some degree.
they're weaker than tetsuo is and akira was, and were easier
to control. the use of the power infantalized them -- they
remain children in both mentality and constitution, tho
their faces age and wrinkle. they were akira's peer, who was
the most powerful wielder of that power, and who (it seems)
caused the first tokyo cataclysm that is shown briefly in
the very beginning. when tetsuo begins to use the force, the
other 'children' keep gasping and mentioning 'akira'..
tetsuo eventually discovers that all that remains of akira
is some preserved tissue in a lab. enough, at any rate, for
akira's 'ghost'/psychic energy/whatever to appear briefly
and smile understandingly after tetsuo collapses, presumably
the same way he did.

its a while since I saw it but ...

at the end there is a shot of some stars/a galaxy, and one
of the characters is talking

Is this supposed to be Tetsuo (or Akira) using their power
to create a whole new universe (with them as the creator)

yep.. . I agree with you and Refund.. . there was allmost no
reason whatsoever for that new overdub.. . the first was
cool.. . I quite liked watching it in japanese with
subtitles for the first time.. . a few other things made a
bit more sense that way. ..

yes its a work of art.. . a master piece and appart from
Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell movie/s nothing else has
come close as far as Im concerned. ..

Steam Boy will be cool though.. . Katsuhiro has a way of
making things extremmely epic.. . even his Manga were
extremmely cinematic. ..

yes, this film is in my top ten. some people may have to
watch it two or three times to understand it, but that's
mainly because the film condensed a long thick series of
manga into a three-hour film, which is a trying task any way
you slice it.

lots of great imagery, a great storyline, and lots of
conflicts and sub-conflicts. you actually see a political,
scientific, everyday-man and religious view of the events
taking place, making the perspective and atmosphere much
broader than most anime.

"TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

"KANEDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!"

cmon guys, stop being so coy

i THINK i understand it (see my earlier posts), but I want
other people to talk about what they think happened at the
end, so I can cross-check.

I just bought the first volume the other day. I like it.
Gainax does good stuff. Ever seen The Wings of Honneamise?

Akira is good. I have the old version and the new one. I
cannot stand the new dubbing, so I usually watch it in
japanese. The restoration is nice. The soundtrack is also
very good.

of the girl popping will stick with me. I also really liked
the part in the hospital when tetsuo sees that giant bear
bleeding milk...the musics great too.
