hi y'all having a wicked problem that needs to be nipped in the bud asap... i keep getting these errors where my computer just switches itself off after quickly showing something that resembles the blue screen of death... it takes about 20 minutes for me to be able to boot my computer up again, when i do it says "windows has recovered from a serious error" when i look at the details it says "minidump" error. i read into this a little bit on various sites, but it doesnt explain too much in the way of combating this... it does however say that its a cooling issue, or dust in the tower... and i did notice upon booting up again that my hd was at 50 degrees which is very high... i have the tower now with one of the panels from the side removed... i figured it would keep it cooler... is this a no-no?
also yeah, a lot of dust, but im too scared to touch anything... any advice???

when i had this i was told to look for virus called worm... something.
i installed free warmblaster ( as i remember the name ) from Symantec web site, and after short scanning problem was solved.
dunno, maybe thats the thing ?

use a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust out.
there are a lot of things you can do to help keep your machine cool. arange the wires better, arrange components and cards for better airflow, add fans, etc..
leaving the side panel shouldn't hurt it at all, unless your cat goes in there and chews cables.

"...and i did notice upon booting up again that my hd was at 50 degrees..."
that is what makes me think it's a heat/ventolation issue. there may also be a virus, or multiple virii involved, but the temperature of the harddrives is a little high regardless, and i doubt a virus is responsible for that.

actually when i started reading your description the first thing i thought of was bad ram. i know you don't want to mess with anything, but if you do happen to change your mind, i'd remove the new ram chip and see if that fixes it.

i just went from 2 x 256 to 1 x 512... so i have just the 1 ram chip right now, does it sound like i've been given a bit of a dodgy one?

heatsinks just spread the heat away from whatever they're touching... usually chip.

it's possible, and it could cause the spontaneous shutdowns. but, so could a dieing powersupply... and tons of other things maybe.
if i were you i'd just leave the side panel off, scan for virii and spyware, and see if it becomes more stable. but, since you have an upcoming gig and it'd suck if your machine died in the middle of that, you should probably call your tech buddys and explain the problems.

I would say RAM too. Possibly just a case of a poorly seated chip rather than a faulty chip. I would say remove the RAM module check all the contacts are clean and just reseat it making sure it is in the first slot on the board.

As for the dust...clean it. Just buy yourself a can of compressed air and use it to blow the dusk away (better than brushing or using a vacuum)
