This was in today's guardian, it kinda freaked me out and
made me wonder why its not over the front pages. Maybe it
isn't accurate. But if it is, then there is going to be
UPROAR

mmmh...

"Draft-dodging will be harder than in the 1960s. In December
2001, Canada and the US signed a "smart border declaration",
which, among other things, will prevent conscientious
objectors (and cowards) from finding sanctuary across the
northern border. There will be no deferment on
higher-education grounds..."

UH OH....

It does, Blair has eased off the bush cock sucking as of
late so it looks unlikely to happen here too. Can't find
much about this on the net tho so I'm questioning its
accuracy.

"why its not over the front pages"

because its current relevance to the uk isn't that high atm?
dunno could be wrong. unlike the guardian to be inaccurate
tho also.....

the guardian article was an editorial, and the source cited
is a political action site, not a government site. the link
that the political action site provides to details about the
supposed legislation is incomplete, so useless; otherwise,
they only provide a link to selective service (since viet
nam every male age 18-26 has to be registered with the
selective service, though there has been no draft in that
time).

it's possible that legislation has been drafted, but will go
nowhere. i suspect that these reports are mostly
inflammatory and politically motivated. i hope that these
reports are not true. at the moment i would say its
hearsay...

It won't happen here anyway. Our forces are being
streamlined. There going to try to focus ours into an
anti-terrorist force, almost like a large military SWAT
team. They'll let the Yanks provide the grunts/cannon
fodder. It does, however, mean we are likely to remain in
bed with America for the forseeable future (as we'd have no
army of our own).

That seems more realistic. Is a bit confusing though.

Supposedly the military objects to a draft because a
resulting army would lack motivation relative to their
current "professional" all volunteer army. Also I read that
they hide the idea of starting a draft underneath obscure
jargon to prevent public awareness.

Do you have bagpipes in U.S. army or was it just navy?
