Bleep Bleep Bleep
Call me sheltered, call me ignorant; just don't call me clued up on what the hell to call the bizzaro nerd noise of Bernhard Kirsch and Dragan Espenschied's Bodenstandig 2000. Gamercore? Colecotek? Whatever it is, it's not your mother's Detroit techno, and that's just how the guys at FTM Records like their artists. A rare Detroit crew pushing decidedly leftfield (you know, non-techno) sounds, the Bodenstandig 2000 release, Hart Rockende Wissenschaftler (Hard Rocking Scientists), will be the label's fifth.
FTM co-owner Jared Wilson is known locally as a purveyor of all things strangefunk, so it's no surprise that he's responsible for making the unlikely connection between Detroit and the Saarland. Following a 2003 performance in Chicago, Wilson was intent on releasing some of the duo's music. After declining initially, they approached him with a track that they believed was "perfect for a Detroit label," appropriately titled Let Me Bang, Bitch. Wilson calls it "chip ghetto tech" (that's as apt a description as anything, I suppose), and it sounds like DJ Assault vs. Frogger. If ever you labored under the impression that Germans don't have a sense of humor, the men of Bodenstandig are bound to change your mind.
The remainder of the five-track EP includes some hardcore business, a bit of chip 'n' bass and some songy Deutschland folk to temper the frenetic arcade assault. Hart Rockende Wissenschaftler is to be released this week, and can be purchased at Record Time Roseville, Threads or direct from FTM at www.feedthemachine.org. Stay tuned for release party details.
