I have had mine since october and haven't noticed any
battery decrease. The batteries seem to last if you take
care of them... apparently keeping them topped up regularly
is preferable to repeated full drains / full charges.
(unlike my phone which died because of me doing that :[ )

BTW, you can pick up new batteries (3rd party) for something
like $35.00 online, I read. A bit better than the $99.00
apple is charging.

The batteries are fine as long as you use it properly and
don't put it on charge whenever you aren't using it - let it
drain before you charge it. The people that have been going
mad about the batteries have had their ipod like 18 months
and it fucks up, but that's just how batteries are. I don't
remember apple promising me anything about a super magical
everlasting infinitebattery.

they`re great...but the battery is shit but you only notice
it when your actaully traveling for more than 8 hours which
is not often...i wish i`d went for the 40 instead of 20 as
i`m full up now and wish i could add more.....time to delete
that john cleese reading dantes inferno methinks. if you
have the blacklight on, eq and are changing tracks every
track the battery life really plumetts to about 4-5 hours,
but if you are sensible then you can milk double that....it
just really varys....the accessories cost a ridiulous amount
also. i`ve used some of the other MP3 players and it`s
really itunes and the nice design that sets the ipod well
above them......i wish they`d get a line in accessory tho=[

I still can't understand why they only put a 8hr battery in.
My last MDisc had 50hrs or so.

can anyone recommend me a mp3 player which you can wire to
your mixer (line-in port), so you can record the mixes and
put them after that on your pc.

some of the iriver mp3players can do this, but they have a
small hard drive and are expensive, anyone have one of
these?

"companies are developing some devices that will "look and
feel'" as good as the iPod, while others will offer
flash-based memory players that will sell for as little as
$50"

The flash-based players will be as litle as $50.
The iPod rival will probably closer to the iPod in pricing.
But look like shit. As every microsoft product does.

MiniDisc players have 40 hour batter life because they use
disposable alkaline batteries (as far as i'm aware) whereas
the iPod has a built in lithium-ion battery which, if you
are accustomed to using rechargeable batteries you will know
that they never have the same power output longevity as
alkaline batteries.

please don't forget that the iPod is an external FireWire
hard disk drive. With moving parts. a backlight display.
built in amplifier. That stuff does take power. Not that I'm
saying MiniDisc players don't have moving parts and stuff,
it's just as I said before - MiniDisc players (to the best
of my knowledge) use disposable batteries.

Most minidisc players use small lithium ion batteries
although some have an optional screw on unit to allow the
use of alkaline batteries.

ah, they must be the newer ones then.

the only MiniDisc players i ever saw were ones that held one
single AA battery in the actual player - it didn't require
an optional unit

thanks for the correction :)

offline horsefactory from 💠 (United Kingdom) on 2004-05-30 15:51 [#01215411]

And because it's lithium ion the best thing you can do is to
keep topping it up regularly, rather than doing full
drain->full charge as you might expect. Regular, random
charges will make it last the longest.

offline ecnadniarb on 2004-05-30 15:52 [#01215412]

There was a range of cheaper Sony players that used one AA
battery in the unit, but the very first Minidisc player I
owned, shortly after they came out used a stick nicad
battery that was shit beyond beleif.

The thing with lithium ion batteries is that if they are
discharged they should be recharged as soon as possible
otherwise they lose their activity. Older ni-cad batters
have a condition known as charge memory (there is probably a
more technical term) where charges before they are
completely empty reduce the life span of the batteries (both
in recharge potential and the power held after recharge).

as far as i'm aware, it's just called the Memory Effect.

That's the reason i bought nickel metal hydride
rechargeables for my gameboy advance - they don't suffer
from the memory effect

offline JAroen from the pineal gland on 2004-06-12 10:49 [#01236568]

NiMH accus can suffer from mem effect too, only it takes
longer for it to show up

any electrochemical cell will eventually die because of it,
the electrode materials will 'leak' into the electrolyte.

thats why i havent got an ipod yet, im afraid the battery
will die

i bought a second hand ipod which is over 2 years old and
the battery is fine, obviously it doesn't last as much as it
did brand new but its fine for now. You can always replace
the battery cheaply and easily anyway. I really can't
understand the fuss about the ipod batteries.

True memory only happens in sintered plate NiCd cells (which
aren't necessarily the sort of NiCd you're using, and are of
course completely different from any kind of NiMH cell), and
it only happens when you precisely discharge a cell to
exactly the same level over and over again, and recharge it
without any overcharge. True memory effect happens in
satellite power systems, electronics test labs, and
practically nowhere else.

Cheap trickle chargers always overcharge if you leave them
long enough, and quality consumer NiCd chargers also
slightly overcharge, because the slight voltage drop that
happens when you do that is what they use to pick the end of
the charge cycle. So even if you're using sintered plate
NiCds, which you're probably not, your charger will cure
memory effect anyway.

What people nowadays call memory effect is a combination of
two things.

One - cell aging. Batteries don't last forever. The older
they get, the less capacity they have. Live with it.

Two - "voltage depression". Voltage depression is a problem
with NiCd batteries and, according to some sources, also
with NiMH, and it doesn't affect the battery capacity much
at all. Rather, the battery voltage drops unusually quickly
as it discharges. Gadgets that monitor their battery voltage
therefore think the battery's flat earlier than they should.
There may be lots of capacity left at the slightly depressed
voltage, but the gadget doesn't know that and flashes its
"low battery" warning.

Fully discharging cells cures voltage depression, but if you
fully discharge a whole battery then the stronger cells in
the battery will "reverse" the weaker ones. The weaker ones
go flat first, and then get charged backwards by the others.
This is very bad for the weaker cells, and will kill a
battery pack quick smart. So don't do it.

google came up with this
