i just watched 'Seven Samurai', it was brilliant.
Can anyone suggest some other good samurai films?

I don't know many samurai films but i know these are good:

Twilight Samurai is meant to be excelent.
Zatoichi

Also watch everything Kurasowa has directed.

i seen zatoichi when it was in the cinema, it was class.
pretty bizarre blend of dancing and swords.

It's all about Yojimbo. And even more often, it's all about
Toshiro Mifune.

Also Shogun is said to be one of the best mini-series ever
made, i haven't seen it yet but it looks very good.

yeah...last samurai really surprised me, as i went in hating
cruise and exploitation of other cultural dealies...but i
could not hate that movie, no matter how hard i tried...i
think i shed a tear when they died by the blooming tree..

OPZ SPOILER!! LOL

if you liked the seven samurai, you'd probably enjoy
director akira kurosawa's other films. basically, they're all classics.
my favorite samurai films (in no particular order): Seven
Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Throne Of Blood, Ran, Rashomon.
he also directed High and Low, Ikiru, and Red Beard, which
are all great as well.

well, kurosawa is widely regarded as one of the more
influential directors ever. it's hard to compare him with
other directors, but a lot of american directors have been
influenced by him and copied his work. my 3 favorite
directors ever are kurosawa, federico fellini, and
alfred hitchcock

Samurai was spectacular. i loved the score.

Other asian directors that are excelent, along with their
best film imo.

Wong Kar Wai - Chungking Express
Hideo Nakata - Dark Water
Takeshi Miike - Audition
Zhang Yimou - Raise the Red Lantern and Hero

Wong Kar Wai is probably the best out of those, probably the
most highly rated asian director of the last decade

By Shogun you mean the old mini-series? If so, yes I have.
And it rules. I read the book too

yeah, i think Takeshi Miike is a bit hit and miss tho,
Audition is awesome but i'd like him to spend a bit more
time on his films. He probably makes 10 films in the time it
takes Wong Kar Wai to make one.

my favorite wong kar wai is fallen angels also check out
in the mood for love

takeshi miike has done a lot of great films as well -
audition was great, happiness of the katakuris, ichi the
killer...

yeah the mini-series, bought it for my mom's b'day, still
waiting for it to come through the post. I also ordered the
sequel by Clavell, 'Tai Pan' which i've heard is even better
than Shogun. Can't wait to see Shogun though, haven't seen
it before, my mother is always going on about how good it is
and that she actually learnt some japanese by watching it.

wai, imo, that i don't think has gotten enough recognition -
Angel Dust

not at all, its a bit gory but not in a realistic way
(mostly), I loved it first time i watched it but its appeal
has kind of worn off. Still, its a good film to watch once.

i would also be remiss if i didn't mention Shinya Tsukamoto
who directed Gemini and Tetsuo: The Iron Man. both
incredible films. i think as a david lynch fan, you'd love
them.
