does anyone here have a radio scanner?
I've wanted one for ages, and I'm thinking of getting one.
I got a Maplin electronics promotion thru the door the other
day, and it has the uk scanning directory and a PSR216
scanner for 109quid.

but for 'only' 250quid, I can get the Yupiteru MVT-7100,
which looks much better.

what do you reckon?

the outcome of this could be:
get a cheap scanner - novelty wears off, sell it
get a cheap scanner - love it get the Yupiteru MVT-7100
(waste 100 quid)
get an expensive one and love it
get an expensive one then loose interest and never use it.

My scout troop has quite a good one (dunno make/model, it's
pretty old though so likely to be discontinued now). When
mobile phones were new you could pick up phone conversations
on it!

It's always good to hear what the police are up to too.

On the plus side with a good scanner you can get excellent
"field recordings" without ever leaving the house/having to
worry about copyright.

how did I know that the first/ only person to reply would be
you Ceri???
anyway, I really want the £250 one, but need somehow to
convince myself that I can spend 250 on it, and not say
music gear.

i could listen to the cops on the cheaper one, but the more
expensive one can listen to SW broadcasts (number stations I
hear you think) and also SSB (single sideband- i.e. long
distance broadcast(global)).

as for the police, they are changing over to TETRA.
TErrestrial Trunk RAdio. which is digital and secure doh. I
know tons about all this sort of stuff, its closely related
to my work.
Ive worked on RF signal generators lots and my company makes
Tetra analysers,so I know all the specs etc.
So I've got a real interest in this sort of stuff, so should
I splash out.

Give me reasons to listen to SW and SSB, like number
stations:)

I was going to say... I haven't seen it, but I want
to.

Did you seem my question re the Vestax faderboard in the
other thread?

"I really want the £250 one, but need somehow to

A scanner is music gear! And as it's relating to your
work it'd be career development too :)

My dad managed to pick up a number station on a "normal"
wireless as a kid, but that was just after WW2.

They were huge down here about six years ago, never really
saw much in them myself...

Good film, if seemingly made by a bunch of inept monkeys.
Darrel Revok, great villain name :D

faderboard=never tried. looks 'interesting'. need to go to
london and look at gear, but I hate london and have no mates
who wanna go with me.

hmm more research needed I think. my dad reckons I should
buy a car instead(and stop using my mums!) but that doesn't
inspire me in the slightest.

god I hate you maplins, get me onto scanners again. my mate
had an ICOM IC-R5, which was sweet, but too small. and now
he never uses it, but he is into gimmicks and im not.
but even so £250 is a lot of money for me. I'm only an
electronic apprentice, so pay is poor.

I suppose I could strut around St.Albans at weekends
impressing ladies with my scanning skills ;)

There's a maplins sale on at the moment, so check again if
you've not in the past couple of days.

I'll hopefully demo a faderboard middle of next week (a
store with one on the way to a job interview), but I've yet
to find anyone who has used one! Main factor for me will be
the sound quality and how the loading of samples (or more
importantly, whole sets of samples) from the smartcard
works.

and if you do get your own car, be sure to get a: "L79AU"
(maplins code) £150 = bargain.

a backlight. i saw them all in the maplins sale thingy they
