classify A. Twin music

vega from providence on 2002-01-07 19:36 [#00066988]

AphexTwin is not tecno. Tecno is what they danced in clubs
in the early 90`s.
Yet i stilldo not know what it is exactly. I like to call it
experimental/ambient/progressive electronica

in 20 years the kind of music most of us on the board list
to will probably be called: "aphex"

old stuff was hard house. thump thump thump thump.

Oddioblender (formerly Organ Grinder) from from my own little phuqed up world on 2002-01-07 23:41 [#00067039]

early on it was ambient, but i agree with hevquip that most
of the Classics material afterwards was hard-house, though
i'd like to think that it fused a tad of ambient and acid as
well -- just listen to songs like "Tamphex" and you'll see
what i mean.

The Caustic Window material is mainly breakbeat / acid, but
I believe all AFX fans prefer it to be classified as
"Classic Braindance!"

Although I hate to use the words "Trance" and "AFX"
together, the Polygon Window material is quite trancy, and
since it was written between 85-89, during the time some of
the ambient works to say, it could be safe to say that this
is how RDJ started out.

Starting soft, and progressively getting harder. Compare
Polygon and SAW to Classics and Caustic. They are merely
months apart, but who really knows when Richard wrote any of
his material?

I Care... and the Hangable Auto Bulb EPs were the beginning
of RDJ's progression into Jungle.....

I Care was a mix of ambient and jungle, just to a less
frantic extent than RDJ Album. It even had a little of his
hard house / early acid with Wax the Nip and COME ON YOU
SLAGS!!

RDJ Album is frantic jungle, mixed with computer love songs
and soothing orchestrial wavelengths.

Come to Daddy -- hard industrial.
Windowlicker -- hip-hop and a tad of industrial in the last
minute.

And to be honest, Drukqs is a little bit of everything
electronic -- songs like Avril 14th are definitely ambient,
or classical, Cock/ver10 is hard jungle acid, Metlphace 6 is
almost trancy, 54 Cymru Beats is hard jungle, Orban EQTrx 4
is hip-hop.......
whew.

That's it. But mainly, APhex Twin wanders in and out of
several genres.... it is IMPOSSIBLE to classify him.

Hence the term IDM.... which they also slap on Wagon CHrist,
Sqaurepusher, Autechre, etc.

IDM = Intelligent Dance Music.

I could agree with that. Let's just leave it at that.

Aint no jungle on I care..

Quoth from Lincoln on 2002-01-07 23:44 [#00067041]

I just call it...

"Progressive electronica" seeing as RDJ has everything to do
w/computers, synthesizers, mic on a piano, drum machines,
and mics on voices really fucked up on acid.

so there ya have it folks... "progressive electronica"

well I believe Rolling Stone magazine called Ventolin a Punk
Rock song, and a Gangstar Rap song all rolled into one... I
don't really see that, do you? Anyways, yeah, it's just
electronic music... I usually just divide all music into
Rock, Electronica, Country, Pop, and World Music... that
works for me... but that's as far as I go...

What's with the desire to categorise his music. Categories
are meaningless & do not allow for uniqueness /
idiosyncrasies. How would you categorise yourself with any
meaning? At the most they can be a vague indicator. I am
white human male (prob like 99% of those on this site) but
you still know next to nothing about me.
