$20 bucks for your hair? that aint so bad. I was just thinking about letting a centimeter or so of it grow out, so I'll look like Jenny Shimizu in Foxfire.

Hmm... I'd always advise against cheap tables for the following reasons:
1. If you're serious about it, you'll have to upgrade, at greater overall cost, later on.
2. If you turn out not to like it, they won't keep anywhere near as high a proportion of their value as technics would (you could by a second hand pair of 12xxs now and then sell them in 6 months time and they'd be worth about the same).
3. If you get really bad ones, you might get frustrated and put off.
4. It's better to buy good ones second hand (so long as you know how to check them to see if they're in good condition) than cheap ones brand new (and there's not much difference in price).
I'd advise you to have a go on a good setup as often as possible (mates house, store, etc.) to see if you like it and if you do, it'll give you the willpower to save up for it (took me about 9 months of very frugal living to get mine, but I don't regret it).
Not knocking Numark decks, the TTX are great by all accounts. But I'd think long and hard before buying some. Also with regard to Technics needles, don't bother with them, get stanton-50xs, very good "budget" styli.

If you're bad at saving, you could do what Drunken Mastah has done, bought one table when he can afford it, then buy a mixer, then get your second table. It'll be about £50-100 more expensive that way (you won't get a reduction for buying it all together or freebies like 'phones, styli, leads, etc.)
Also, so long as you have a fairly assured income, maybe layaway is the way to go? Although I'd make sure:
a) The credit terms were favourable (I know of some places that give 0% credit for a year then whack you about 36% APR thereafter- which is something I'd go for- just pay it off within a year!)
b) I was serious about it (nothing worse than paying off debt you accrued on something that is now gathering dust).

Okay! Everyone sit down! Its story time!!
((Thanks for the advice, Ceri....I'm taking all this down))
WELL, my parents, although japanese/Mongol, are OBSESSED with Rastafarian culture, music and Bob-Ficking-Marley. Dont get me wrong, I heart the Marley and the Wailers and ETC, but Ever since I was 2 or 3 years old, I had DREADS. Not greasy coils of nasty but DREADS. And I dont know hooow they manages that shit with our chinky ass hair, but they were true to heart. My Mom eventually Cut hers to shoulder lentgh, and My Dad (Who's running around in Brazil) has got the mofo's down to his ankles. 0_0
Well, I had past-the-ass length dreads until I was 16, then I had to cut them off. I havent decided to let it grow back since. I like the random people feeling my dome up, and wind and hot showers....and especially when a girl comments on 'friction'
You have all been informed! --sweeping bow--
/end story time.

Quite amusing, as I'm reading up on rastafarianism at the moment (partly because I'm getting more and more into Dub music and want to understand the lyrics to a greater extent and partly because I'm always trying to slowly expand my knowledge of religions outside my own).
I've only once seen one guy (in the flesh) with dreads longer than your dad's, this guys were literally dragging on the floor (only a couple of inches) as he walked.
One more question re: 'tables, what sort of music are you looking to play on them, mainly for listening or DJing (I'm assuming that as you want 2), be it just bedroom/house party or do you aim to play out?

If you're going to be doing drum and bass and breakbeat it might be worth considering a scratch mixer, it's certainly possible on a normal house mixer (2 channels will do), but I find it much easier to make the fast transitions on a scratch mixer (and keep the upfaders for slow fades). As always, try as many setups as possible and see what suits your style of play! :)

yeah agreed. i do loadsa dnb and i use a vestax pmc06 proA mixer. (scratch mixer). it cuts out all the crap so well, I beleive Greg Dyke has designed it. Bare bones, but so good. its intuitive, you can do it all with your eyes closed(beleive me I do a lot).
p.s. dnb heads new dom n roland album promos are wicked, unlike 99% of dnb now with stupid rollers and kids going yeah yeah yeah bad man.
p.p.s vinyl people. I went to my local record shop and they had loadsa warp stuff really cheap, cos the distributors found a load in the warehouse. tons of 12"s singles and peel sessions for BOC, mira calix(crap as always),vic acid :D, red hot car, loadsa stuff. So people in the UK have a look for it.
p.p.s.s Numark are crap. read the topic here for more opinions.

"its intuitive, you can do it all with your eyes closed (beleive me I do a lot)."
Ha ha, me too! (note to other folks, I have a v. similar mixer).
Dave: BTW There's a cool "square wave" fader curve on the Pro D. The main purpose of it is to make it easy to get perfectly rhythmic crabs/burst of transform type sounds, but it's also v useful for fast cuts between 2 channels (only have to move about 1mm for channel one to go fully off and channel 2 to be fully on and vice/versa)/ Although, truth be told, I tend to just use the basic "scratch" curve, sharpened as much as possible.
Also, have you used a vestax faderboard, I'm going to demo one next week hopefully?

Good thread, this'n.
Physt: I say grow your hair back out for a while... just to give your head a change of scenery =). I would even suggest getting dreads but, well, you've already had them. I couldn't deal with my dreads... my hair is very thick and like half curly/half straight, so it was dreading up nicely, but I have very sensitive skin (especially on me scalp) and all the itching and irritation was causing a fucking blizzard of dandruff on my head, and bleeding from so much scratching. In the end, I realized that I enjoy washing my hair every day... but dreads were fun for a little while.

excerpt from TT200 review: "What's the difference between this and higher priced turntables? In percentage terms, whereas most budget turntables compete with high end turntables at about 30-50%, the TT200 is closer to 75%. Although the construction is much better than its counterparts, the overall grade of the parts is not as high as the 1200. It still has a plastic feel. Although its torque is higher than the 1200, the motor on the 1200 feels stronger (dues to combination of platter weight and body stability). The TT200 is a very functional turntable, but it doesn't quite feel like a finely tuned piece of equipment. When buying equipment, we always say you get what you pay for. With the TT200 you get the most for your money."
