can you honestly imagine saying 'intelligent dance music'
out loud? I certainly hope not--it's the most pretentious
genre moniker ever conceived. Might as well call it "the
stick in my ass makes me better than you".

IDM sounds kinda neat; maybe I'll think of it as ingesting
diabolical matrix, or intrinsic destructive malice, or
interstitial diabetic malignancy, or ..

luckily everyone who knows what I listen to hates it, so I
can refer to it as 'my shit', or 'that twitchy shit', or ..

yes yes, we've been over this before (no I'm not referring
to my threads sucking.. haha yes I aren't)

i like IDM, the term and everything. i have no problem with
it. but others do when i try and explain. because the word
dance is in there, all the ppl who try to explain it to use
the combination of the word dance and electronically made to
quickly categorize it as rave or techno. then they
immediatly think i listen to darude, and thus im a faggot.
hmm

ill give it a try myself.

brilliant music but it's for intelligent people only, so
fuck off dumb asses.

comeon, but how can you stand to say it is 'intelligent'?

I have a real problem with adjectives used in naming schemes
which provide no illumination and only have subjective
semantics, often arrogant. For instance in programming
there are 'smart pointers', which are usually 'scoped
pointers' or 'reference counted pointers'--the word smart is
meaningless, and just makes the originator look like a
cunt.

me and my intelligent cat listen to intelligent music in my
intelligent home, because I am so intelli
haughty

yeah i know it is a little arrogant but really, it took
allot of intelligence to produce some of the electronica we
listen to. and we have to say its intelligent because in the
fields of music genres, its the smartest most intelligent
one there is when compared to some others such as pop and
rap.

Come on, no one has a problem with product names like,
"Power Shakes"...

People have been using self-congratulatory names in music
for years and unlike the IDM artists, the artists/labels
themselves made them up. Look at early turntablists,
everyone is "Grandmaster", "Grandwizard", "Grandmixer" or
"Cutmaster". Dub artists prefix their artist name with,
"Prince" or "King", etc.

Certainly, "Intelligent Dance Music" sounds like you think
you're more intelligent than your average pop/commercial
dance fan (who likes nothing else), but let's be honest, a
hell of a lot of us are, aren't we? The fact that we get
upset over the way people percieve us as elitist (because of
the name) is so common that it's recognised as a quality of
IDM fans in itself! "...some of them despise the term..."
(Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music)

So; it's not an ideal name, and even by genre definition's
standards, it's not a great indicator of what a track will
sound like (compared to saying, "Oh, it's Indie-rock" or,
"It's Drum and Bass"), however, and this is the most
important thing and the reason
a) We use genre names
and
b) We shouldn't let it worry us
is,
IT'S SIMPLY CONVENIANT WHEN TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE
FAMILIAR WITH THIS SORT OF MUSIC MUSIC!

Certianly, the term isn't ideal, but it's pretty much here
to stay, even if we all boycotted it, the press/industry
would still refer to it as that. So, let's keep using it,
but keep a knowing glint in our eyes as we say it, eh? :)

i just say experimental electronica, but that more a
description than a name
but whats the use of the name idm if nobody knows it or
wants to use it
but we're just stuck with idm, braindance is gay (in the
original meaning of the word mostly) anyway
