i have a computer problem

yes, this is a question which should be asked on a tech
support forum, but those forums suck. (period)

here is my problem:
I just installed norton internet security 2003 on my
computer. I did the suggested symantec live update and
restarted my computer like it said. When I restarted I
noticed that the task bar wasn't loading very fast, which
ended up not loading at all. I get a "settings alert" which
says there may be an attacker trying to prevent my from
doing anything. It suggests that I uninstall and reinstall
all symantec programs, however I cannot remove the programs
because windows installer has been messed up also.

i hate computers.

why don't you uninstall those problems if you log in in the
safe mode? or can't you do that either?

this is a really really bad time for my computer to screw
up. I'm in the middle of filming and I have about half a
movie edited on my computer.

surely you backed up your stuff?

i mean, if i was seriously into filming and editing I'd do
all my stuff on an external 7200rpm firewire drive, so all
my stuff would be intact should my system go down.

i hope that things can be sorted out for you - i know how
much of a bitch Windows can be.

i'm not seriously into filming, this is a project (albeit a
hefty one). What i've done so far is all fine (though
getting it off this computer without a working drive may
prove difficult), the problem is I cant use the editing
program to finish the rest. I just discovered I have no
internet connection (how am i on xltronic?)

can you get access to another computer?

are you running Windows NT/2000/XP?

if you can get access to another computer, rip the hard
drive out of your machine and stick it in the other computer
as a slave and copy accross your data. if your machine is
running the above OS's you'll need to use a machine that is
running an OS capable of using NTFS drives

Norton anything = 10% chance of catastrophic failure, 50%
chance of software incompatibilities (i.e., some or all of
your apps will stop working), 75% chance of moderate to
severe performance degradation, 100% chance of feelings of
helplessness, shame and sexual inadequacy.

i'm not going to go through the whole switch-a-roo, that
always causes more problems than it fixes.

fleetmouse=correct

well actually, if you do it right it doesn't cause any
problems.

all you're doing is hooking up your hard drive to another
computer, then starting windows from the other computer's
hard drive so that you can access the files on your hard
drive.

simple, and a a piece of piss to do.

Oscillik is correct - if you install your drive as a
secondary (slave) in another PC, you'll be able to copy your
data over. Or if you have the spare cash, buy a second
drive, install a fresh Windows, then put in your old drive
as slave and copy your documents and movies and pr0n over.
Then you can use the leftover drive to make backups once in
a while.

its hard to explain butmy hard drive sucks. last time i
tried to reformat it cancelled halfway through and i was
left with a half formatted drive. I tried about 20 more
times over the course of two days and on the last try it
worked, without doing anything differently. I've had it
looked at and nobody seems to be able to tell me why it
would do that.

Ya so, what i'm saying is there's a evil faery inside my
computer.

i have a specific and answerable question (cheer).
I want to uninstall internet security, however the only way
to do that (according to the user's guide) is by going to
start menu and going to norton internet security and
clicking on uninstall. The problem is i have no start menu,
or taskbar, so how do i uninstall this piece of duty.

what OS are you running?

if it's Windows 2000 or Windows XP, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and
click Task Manager, once the Task Manager comes up, you
should be able to run a program from the File menu.

i'm running XP (forgot to say that)
hitting ctrlaltdel just makes the task manager pop up, no
clicking, and what do you mean by running a program from the
file menu.

if norton actually has a proprietary uninstaller program,

Click Open or "Run this program from its current location."

Click Yes at the next prompt.
Click Yes at the license agreement.
When the installation has finished, at the "Windows Script

Close Windows Explorer.
If you could not delete one or more of the files or folders
that are listed in steps 2-4, restart the computer and
repeat steps 1-6. When performing these steps, note which
files or folders you still cannot delete.
If you still cannot delete all the files and folders that
are listed in steps 2-4, repeat step 7 until all indicated
