yo.
just finished the dvd for the installation im doing in a
giant white cube as of next monday. the audio + video is way
too huge to put up, but i put the 35 minute audio file up on
my website for download + some video screenshots... the
music is very disorientating, so if your into a mind
fuck...

...im really really happy with the sound, would love some
people to check it out, esp those into dark ambient. i know
its 35 minutes long, i wouldnt have posted this and wasted
your time if i didnt think it was some of my best work.

the sound is composed entirely from field recordings... yet
doesnt necessarily sound that way.

click for info, link & screenshots

its being rendered to dvd as we speak at uni, will take a
day at least to render... then i will try and compress it to
quicktime... maybe make 5 minute excerpts or something...
depends on how much i can fit on my site :)

I'd be more interested to see it with the visuals, as that's
what it's made for.

yeah it is designed as a physical experience, 6 speakers, 4
walls, and its a shame i cant share this work with you
guys... i do think the audio stands up well in its own
context however...

yeah all editing and conversion has been done on macs at uni
using premier... its been a bitch to put on dvd...

holy crap. come to adelaide!

should have done something like that for the fringe. this
looks awesome, downloading now.

if you need anything encoded, can sort it out - i've
currently got a video encoding/producing rig on loan from
apple australia for some other work i'm undertaking. of
course, i'm guessing you're perfectly competent in doing
this yourself, but the offer's there. :-)

thanks, the installation runs on loop for about 5 days for
this really wierd art festival... i wish i could stay in
there for the entire time to see peoples reactions to this,
i think it will disturb a lot of people... the space is
awesome... literally i giant white cube with a capacity of
about 100 people...

thanks xf, i will be doing the rounds of oz late 04 early 05
launching my lp, so i will come to adelaide and hopefully i
will get an opportunity to show this piece :)

take a video of the setup, walk around it with a camera or
something. it'll give us a taste of the feel you've
intended.

I really would like to do a 5.1 surround sound DVD album at
some point as well (although that'd require me getting a
soundcard with surround sound support and some proper
speakers). Downloading the music now, I'm a fan of your work
so I'm looking forward to hearing this.

basically its 34 minutes of smoggy industrial wasteland,
factories, brown rivers, decaying trees people gambling, jet
planes, trucks and lots of smog, moves into these industrial
kellidoscopes with mashing up machinery *admittedly this is
slightly reminiscent of geogaddi art, but not in a huge way*
ends with a little child playing with a music box (my lil
sister) to contrast the whole depressing, miserable video...
i dont know why we did that but it has a nice effect esp
when you hear the final minute of audio.

Enjoying it so far. Are the field recordings processed in
any way (aside from things like EQ/slight reverb),
re-pitched, delayed, flanged, filtered, etc.?

the amount of processing on the fields is insane, i pretty
much always had 2 or 3 things being spat out by the
granuliser at all times... it was free reign, but i recall
mostly granulisation, delay, reverb and pitch shifting... :)

It's quite mad, I'm listening to it on a surround system (I
know only stereo, but sounds are coming from speakers behind
me too) and I've got the windows open, so extra
"environment" noises are coming in from either side and it's
hard to tell what's on the track and what's real (although I
know the lawnmower is real) :)

great stuff! so many differents things going on in such a
minimalistic recording...covers everything from calm to
intense stuff...how long did it take you to record this? i
mean, how long were you collecting the sounds?

Finished listening to it. Good work, different to your usual
output.

Listening to the finished Fourier Transfer now too... liking
it, that brief clip didn't do it justice.

Its extremely impressive that it is a halfhour long. To
maintain the quality (referring to the audio) for such a
long time, and keep things flowing is quite an
accomplishment.

PS: I see you disposed of your Joe Madueira avatars :)

sorry tolstoyed, i forgot to answer your question... all the
fields were recorded on 3 seperate days... day 1 was at the
port and industral wastelands, where we were escorted off a
total of 4 properties, one of which was very unsettling due
to the acres of dead lands and a horrible sludge covering
everything.
day 2 was in the city where we recorded people talking,
arcade machines and we were escorted from the casino for
recording in there... day 3 we followed the side of the
brisbane river as far as it went, recording factories,
ferries, boats and general 'river' sounds... :)

It's excellent. If you do the DVD with the video I will
definitely (genuinely) buy it. Seriously, words cannot
describe how good I think this is. For a 35 minute track it
is amazing that it never gets dull.

huh, i'd expect you were recording this for a much longer
time...but i guess that's how it's done...to be prepared,
and to know exactly what to record before you actually go
out and start recording...it reminds me of what scanner and
some video artist are doing - they made an album out of it
as well. they were touring around the world in some well
known cities (london, new york, tokyo, paris...), and when
they arrived scanner went out recording "city sounds", and
the video artist was recording traffic, buildings,
people...they would then make an presentation in each of the
cities in the evening...and that album sounds fantastic...im
sure you know of it though :)
