rpgs were at their pinnacle in the days of snes yesteryear.

And yes. yes. earthbound. so much humour & character.. many
of us cherish that title, even if they've only got a rom
file.

.. .. ..
damn.. i think i am turning dyslexic.. it took me forever to
type that and i kept jumbling all the letters within words..
and leaving out words.. and most still don't look
like they are spelled right..
why does this type of stuff have to set in now, after
19 years of life on this fuckin' planet?
my brain's turning to shit. i guess..
it must be time to give up my last, lingering bit of sanity
to an snes-rpg..
or maybe even a genesis game of some kind.. even though i
didn't actually have one back in the day, and it won't be
nostalgic, that "all your base.." phrase just
might make some sense to me now..

yeah, it was the best time of my life.

i can remember those days clearly,
the cool blowing winds of a hot summer day,
birds chirping away and white fluffy clouds,
the fresh newly rented copy of secret of mana in my little
hands,
the scent of the brand new ink in the instruction maunal...

ahhhh

The two best games of all time are
1- Chrono Trigger
1b- Earthbound

I remember the day I got both. Chrono Trigger was a Godsend,
and I knew it was going to be. From the moment I saw the
preview for it in EGM, I knew this game was going to be
ridiculous. Both Chrono games crushed their competition,
including Final Fantasy. I think Cross is still one of only
two 10s that Gamespot ever gave out, and those pricks are
harsh.

Earthbound was a huge surprise. I read a review for it in an
old EGM (Street Fighter 2 on the cover), and it didn't look
like it merited my attention. Then a week later, I saw it on
sale on a local video game store in a HUGE box. It came with
a big strategy guide, complete with hideous scratch and
sniff stickers. It was cheap, and obviously the kids were
too busy buying cool, mature, hardcore stuff like Mortal
Kombat II to care about plain looking games like Earthbound.
So I took a chance on this ugly duckling game. I still can't
get over how funny it is.

I heard a Gameboy Advance version was in development,
haven't heard much on that front... my God, it had better be
good.

Some independent developer geeks are working on a 3D remake
of Chrono Trigger.

Pretty redundant, remaking a game that was without flaw.

"i cant stop thinking about getting it..."

Just get it. I had to pay a ridiculous amount of money to
get my hands on it, but it was worth every cent. What a
brilliant game.

Illusion of Time was a really good one too, developped by
Enix before they joined Squaresoft. It was a little too easy
perhaps, but the story was absolutely fantastic. I got
sucked into it and played almost nonstop for days.
Brilliant.

The sequel called Terranigma was one of the few rpg's
(probably the only one) to be released in Europe and not in
the US. Hehe, I was always so frustrated that all the good
games never seemed to make it over here and that those
americans got all that goodness. And then finally it
was the other way around one time :-p

yeah?

it is the last game i need to complete my collection.
im not gonna go and spend 80-140$ each on the last remaining
copies of FF3 and Chrono Trigger (SNES) because i already
have the PS collectors editions. And i have mana and
evermore, so i guess that leaves mario RPG, its going for
30$ where i saw it and its in terrible looking condition.
hell i could have sworn there were bite marks on the side.
which is very odd seeing as they looked like the exact same
bite marks i inflicted on the cartridge when i was having
trouble with a part of the game. could this be my old copy
which has been selling around the city for the past 7
years?

They're all exactly the same. Some powerful morally bankrupt
corporation trying to use the Earth's power to make money...
then you play some dude using the Earth's power to fight
them. Complete shit, all of them.

Crono Trigger was good. Crono Cross sucked ass.

That 3d remake looks awesome, especially if its exactly like
the original only 3d. I would play it for sure.

My alltime favorite was FF3 (VI), I had tears at the
ending... truly the most epic game I've ever played.

Oh so you've already played the game? Well that changes it.
I find that rpg's are alot less fun to play through a 2nd
time.

Altough it's been 7 years you say, so you might have
forgotten alot of the story and such. It's up to you I
guess. $30 seems like alot for a cartridge in such bad
condition. Altough if there was some way to find out if it
really was your old copy... that would be kinda cool!
:-p I reckon then it'd be worth it. Maybe you should take a
picture of the bitemarks and ask your dentist about it ;-)

(there is a reasonable chance it's the one I think...
probably not alot of cartridges get bitten I suppose. In my
case it was usually the controller that had to suffer when a
game frustrated me. I bit them, threw them around the room,
hit them against the edge of my bed etc.)

Ofcourse there is always the chance Nintendo will decide to
port it to GBA. Not a bad idea infact, there is a whole new
generation of kids who've never experienced it.

The Chrono Trigger remake is a stupid idea imo. What's wrong
with 2D graphics? Kids these days don't know how to use
their imagination anymore. ;-) SNES-rpg's left alot more to
the imagination. Nowadays you see every location in glorious
3D-graphics. Every emotion is portrayed on the characters
faces... in the SNES-days you had to imagine all of that
stuff. The game just told the story and that's it. It's like
when book gets turned into a film. The film is easier to
enjoy and fun to look at. But the book stimulates your
imagination much more and ultimately has more depth.

Besides, from what I've heard they're not going to remake
the entire game. Just some of the most important scenes.
That makes it even more pointless :-/

I have FF III waiting for me in my drawer full of
SNES-games. I bought it together with FF II... and I thought
I should play through FF II first. But that game has ages
pretty badly :-( The graphics look... okay. Altough on the
simple side and almost without animation. The music on the
other hand is fantastic.

But what really puts me off is the translation. Ugh... I
don't know who translated it, but the results are laughable.
Full of weird grammar and stupid simple sentences. It makes
quite a boring read and manages to destroy the entire plot
(which seems interesting enough otherwise). After a few
hours I felt forced to stop playing. I think at some point
I'll just start with FF III and forget about II.

No you're not :-p

Well I suppose you could say all the outlining plots are
similar (not the same but similar). But for me, what
really matters with an rpg is the character development and
all the neat little touches and small side-quests. Those are
the things that can really make a world come alive. That's
what creates the atmosphere and the feel of a game... and in
that aspect all the rpg's I've played were very different
from each other.

Illusion of Time? Rings a bell, are you talking about
Illusion of Gaia? Maybe it's called something different in
North America. Anyway, I loved that game, even if some of
the ''dungeons'' were waaaaaayyy too huge and confusing. The
story was awesome, I still remember that sweet little raft
scene. Ahhhhh! :_-)

I recently traded Counterstrike for Xbox (what was I
THINKING?) for my cousin's Final Fantasy 9, which I've never
beaten. Started a save, and it's OK. Final Fantasy 8 will
always be my favorite. Squall is the best character ever in
an RPG, and he makes up for the goofy experience system.

offline Combo from Sex on 2004-05-20 10:33 [#01197963]
Points: 7540 Status: Regular

Squall is weak and FF 8 is definitely the worst FF ever. The
7th was the last good FF but after it has become too easy
and there's been a lack of imagination IMO. Chrono Cross
rocks ; who tells the contrary must have never played it.
Illusion of time = Illusion of Gaia. It's a really nice
game.
FF6 is really great but too easy IMO.

Ah yes, I believe it was also known as Illusion of Gaia.
Combo confirms it so it must be true. Such a good game. I
liked how they made the action element alot of fun to play.
That guy had plenty of moves. Probably more than Link. It
played like a dream.

And yes, ofcourse the story was the best part :-)
Actually I don't remember it too well :-o But I remember
being moved by it on several occasions. And there was also a
great feeling of being on a huge journey all across the
world.

One of my favourite moments was when I left a town. And
later when I wanted to use one of my items I suddenly
noticed a strange object in my inventory that I hadn't seen
before. It turned out to be a letter that began with: "I
secretly slipped this inbetween your equipment while you
were sleeping" :-D Absolutely brilliant!

One of my worst memories though was when I had finished the
game... defeated the last boss and I put down my controller
to sit back and enjoy the ending. And right at that moment
my mom walked into to room started talking to me (I don't
even remember about what. Probably just some boring
conversation like "how was school today?" etc.). And I tried
to make her go away. "Mom, I really want to see this." But
she wouldn't listen. "Oh don't be silly, it's just a
computergame. Put it on pause or something."

Aaaargh! How can someone have such bad timing? It was
horrible. After she had (finally) left I had to hit reset
and beat the game again to watch the ending. I
remember it was worth it though. Days later I was still
thinking about that story and how it ended. God, it's so
strange I don't recall it now anymore. :-s I vaguely
recollect the ending taking place in modern times. In a
school or something.... damnit I just forgot. I'll have to
replay it again sometime soon.

I'm almost done with FF2. Its quite boring though. And the
music repeats too much and stuff. I'm kinda forcing myself
to beat it though, then I can move on to FF5 (the one with
the henious amounts of class/job systems).

But I think you might enjoy FF3 (6) more. The graphics are
better than ff2 and the story is really great. I dunno, when
I first played it I was young and I really got involved in
it because it was super-high tech and stuff at the time of
its release, but when i go back, I feel like I'm missing
some of that 'original' feeling.

Hm... so you're saying it doesn't get better as you go
along? I really don't think I wanna put any more time in it
in that case. Maybe I'll sell it again. Since it was never
released in europe I could probably get a good price for
it.

I'm sure III will be better :-)
I know what you mean though... nothing is as special anymore
as the games you played when you were a kid. Even when I go

good fun, but some of the magic has dissapeared.

lol ;-)

yeah life is full of priorities.

Those bonusgames are pretty tricky. Especially the one with
the racing yoshi's! But it's very nicely done how they break
up the rpg-element every once in a while and let you play
those minigames. I also like how you can come back to replay
them whenever you like. So by the time you've reached the
last level, your savegame has become a minigame-collection
of sorts :-)
