i'd say that, though not completely uniform, for the most part people who are on one side of the class war are also on the same side of the generation war, gender war, religious war, etc. it's not really that much of a multiple front war.. |

Stop getting so wound up by media coverage. Media sensationalism of events that have and always will exist isn't symbolic of the collapse of society. |

i don't see us quite shipping of to hell in our handbasket yet... but i think there is something to be said for the fact that many societies are facing a pretty significant polar clash right now... it's probably true that media sensationalism has something to do with it... but it just so happens that the majority's perception of society is directly affected by this sensationalism, and is spurred on by it... |

Most westerners I know (you know, the type who don't go on internet message boards) don't give a fuck about the media. A group of net geeks worrying over the collapse of society isn't going to make it happen. British tabloids...which are the only source of news for the vast majority of british people are more interested in whether David Beckham had his knob sucked by Rebecca Loos than prison abuse. |

Agree with all Ecnadniarb points except this casual dismissal of "generation war" >generation war (this isn't even a war) Of course, calling every kind of conflict or schism a war doesn't really help us understand anything (just another sad influence of the washington neoconservatives and their pervasive jargon... a war on terror anyone? wtf!). But I think the age issue may become much more significant in the developed world in the next 50 years: birth rates and mortality rates dropping --> an increasingly aged population --> proportion of economically actives: dependents dropping (exacerbated by increasing numbers of people on long-term sick leave) --> economic quagmire. We may well be faced with a situation in which a country (eg. the UK), still too jaded with thatcherite individualism to realise that 40% is not a high enough top rate of income tax, has to make a choice between adequate education for the young and adequate provision and healthcare for the elderly. This conflict will be coloured by class, as are all economic conflicts, cos you know it's not the CEO's son or elderly parents who are gonna feel the squeeze. |
