why english?

I understand that rock started in the USA, and then in the
60s UK also became like the birthplace of all pop music

but I wonder how has it come to a point that even spanish
pop bands sing in english (sexy sadie, dover, melon
diesel...) and not only that, any north european band sings
in english too despite of their nationality, even in idm
world.

bjork sings in english

right now names dont come to my head, but you know what I
mean.
its obvious that english sends your work to lots more
people, but anyway its incredible how english has become the
only language of popular music

well.. not every north-european band sings in english..
there are lots of bands here in norway that sing in
norweigan, but the thing is that they don't get known
outside of their own countries if they don't sing in
english, 'cause people don't understand.

you don't have to use english to be successful. ofcourse
it's safer to do so, that's the easy road a band might take
to be more 'universal' acceptable. but, if you choose to
sing in your native language, you will sound more unique and
sincere, and that can be something people will notice and
appriciate. i take for example Rammstein and Sigur Rós.
both very succesful and unique, mainly because they choose
their own language to express themselves.

Well music is a good means of cultural invasion.
Globalisation etc etc.

in the past decades only france (chanson) and italy really
exported pop music in their own language

I understand the economical point of view
but though english is a great and beautiful language, I
think its important that the rest of the countries fight for
getting a proper pop scene in their own language

bands will export if the product is really good

now its easier with inernet

I like the old kraftwerk songs much more in german than in
english, Trans-Europa-Express for example...

songs in my own native language (dutch) sound far too
straightforward. dutch songs have a typical
metaphorical/poetic value of zero (with some exceptions of
course). with respect to the dutch language english is a far
more associative language.

that song in kill bill is the most unoriginal piece of shit
i've heard. it has that familiar 'dundundundun dundundun
dun' bassline that features in about trillions of other
unoriginal songs. and also it's a rip-off of the familar
ren&stimpy theme. i actually thought it was a r&s theme
cover when i first heard the song.

but yeah, it's fun though. wh00 h00 wh00h00 h00 = which is
the only "original" thing in the song

Its the legacy of British and American imperialism I'm
afraid.

Not many non-English speaking bands dent our charts but the
Super Furry Animals managed to get in the top ten with their
Welsh language album Mwng.

another thing that comes to mind, is that english is pretty
simple, so you don't have to think much to put together
something that sounds good.

Aside from China, English is the language most spoken in the
greatest trade powers, as well as there being a lot of
people who speak it in other affluent countries (like a lot
of Swiss, Swedish and German people speak it reasonably
well) you want to sell more copies or, at least the same
number of copies but for more money, it has to be in
English.

English is spoken in the US... the US is probably the
biggest commercial centre in the world... as far as
materialism and shit... so, probably more people buy music
there, so English would have a higher value I guess...
