isis is a very good band, i'm just not that into them. i
dig some isis, but not enough to buy their records... i
have heard all of them, though..

i haven't heard many of the young gods' songs, and i haven't
heard any from this album.

i didn't mean to condemn the rest of the list with my lack
of *, but i couldn't necessarily rate them without having
heard them...

Anything off Constellation records.
My pick off that label would be Do Make Say Think

I approve wholeheartedly of Ruins, and most other bands that
have put stuff out on Ipecac. Kaada kicks ass too, in a
weird way.

yeah, the little that I have heard of ruins i tought was
really cool... i had it on my old computer which then had
the harddrive cooked and i haven't heard it since... any
album recommendations?

I like Tzomborgha a lot, but I haven't heard all their
stuff. I have that one and Symphonica and I've heard one or
two others but I think that is their most solid effort.
It's so complicated and bizarre and awesome. "Two thumbs
up...way up!"

to be fair, i haven't hear that much of the ruins. but what
i've heard was just too prog-rock-y for my taste. i'm sure
they're a good band, probably just not my style.

Theres a 60s band called (the?) Silver Apples who are
amazing... for about a year I thought they were a 90s band
until I was informed otherwise. Totally ahead of their time.

Very cool, Danny Taylor's drums definitely sound utterly
modern. He's a tricky one. They're pretty much a one trick
pony, but it's an awesome trick.

Lothar and the Hand People- crazy psychedelic shit that
lives up to their name, weirdness-wise... pretty ahead of
their time with some of their goofy production techniques.

Wooden Wand and Vanishing Voice... more sweet esoteric folk
with odd instrumentation and really messed up half-spoken
vocals... this one comes highly recommended...

here's the promoey type thing which is basically the only
write-up that i can find for their awesome album XIAO at
this point...
"Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice comprises ex-members of
folk / psych space cadets of the Golden Calves / Polyamory
axis, plus a host of other rebels, freaks and prophets, all
so deeply affected it’s as if Jesus himself had reached
his hand down the front of their pants. ‘Xiao’ is laid
thick with the musik fur alle vibes; they seek alternative,
primarily non-electric methods of melting down orange
amplification, leaving everyone trippin’ / slippin’ in
the resulting goo. Expect many things bowed and plucked and
wet cardboard percussion, providing the backdrop for Wooden
Wand to sermonize on the evils of fluoride and read the
poetry of anonymous inner city hoods. Death to the prosaic
punks! ‘Xiao’ will appeal to all hippies interested in
Apache / Inca, Limbus, Siloah, Angise Maclise,
Vibracathedral Orchestra, THE master QSH, sperm, Joe Jones,
NNCK, etc. Georgeous full color covers with liner notes by
Thurston Moore"

did i mention that if you want any of this stuff i recommend
you should try finding me on slsk?

this problem is due to firewall issues... (i'm not really

perhaps someone here could tell me how i would go about
fixing that?

Bulbul: "Drabule" is fucking nice! Listening to the 12" right
now and it rocks!

"News from Europe's slowest beefmetal trashgroup.

4 track 12" featuring a Sluta Leta cover in their typical
zombie garbage rottenrock style. Hear Ronnie Peterson play
the Jew's harp whilst driving backwards in Monte Carlo, or
Django Reinhardt at the fountain of youth with his ankles
caked in mud. Crawl through the sewage system of dub beneath
Marlon Brando babbling in your ear with a heavy
nightingale's tongue. And, if you manage to get out of this
there'll be a squadron of helicopters waiting to fall on
your head one after the other.

Abule, Zwabule, Drabule."

i find it surprising no one has mentioned modest
mouse
(the moon and antarctica), or built to
spill
(keep it like a secret), or broken social
scene
(you forgot it in people), or spiritualized
(ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space) or even
blur (13) or the decemberists (her majesty the
decemberists), or i dunno.

not to knock any of those bands... as all of them are

Der Blutharsch, but I don't know if they'd qualify as rock.
I guess they're as much rock as a few of the oddities in
this topic. At a certain point of weirdness, the borders are
smudgy. Maybe they're too orchestral, and there's not enough
cowbell.

Comus (in particular, the album First Utterance is quite
lovely)

oh and some creepy shit too:

Mnemonists aka Biota

check out the album Horde... it's from 1981... similar to
something like Nurse With Wound or Coil... very
beautifulscaryetcetera...the last track, Triptych,
absolutely blows my mind...

and furthermore... you should check out Tower Recordings

which includes PG Six alongside Matt Valentine, Helen Rush,
Dean Roberts, Tim Barnes and others... including Samara
Lubelski... who is on the verge of dropping a very beautiful
full length album of her own... keep your ear to the ground
and you might get to hear her beautiful voice...

Tower Recordings is a mix of lo-fi psychedelic
experimentation and beautiful, at times minimalistic, song
writing... check check

Furniture Music For Evening Shuttles ... one of their fine albums...

Very powerful, driving "math rock" or whatever. John peel
said a few years back that they're the only people he was
jealous of who weren't footballers. They're really, properly
awesome.
