Is it possible to set up a direct connection between my laptop and main computer? Just connecting them with a network cable?
I need to transfer files between the two. The laptop is running XP Home and the stationary is running XP Pro.
How do I do this? Also, I'm just curious about how the file browsing happens and so on. Do you use the explorer or what?
Danke schön in advance.

If you are not using a hub inbetween them then you need something called a cross over cable. It basically looks the same as a normal network cable but some of the wires are crossed over in one of the plugs.
I think there is a way to network using USB but I have never had any need to look into it so I am not sure.

You could then just use the Windows networking wizard to get yourself up an running.

needs to be a crossover cable, which you can make easily from a regular cat5 cable (swap two pairs of wires) or purchase. Only way to tell it apart from a regular is the color wires have different ordering on both ends, as opposed to being identical.
After that set each machine to some local internal IP (192.168.0.1 or something) and you're fine. You may also have to tell it that the sister machine can be found through the eth card (I never use windows, so can't tell you specifics)

Alright thanks both of you. I know I don't have any crossover cables here so..
About six months ago I used ICQ, but that only goes up to 600kB/sec for me (on wireless) and it's a bit slow for large moviefiles.
I have this shitty D-Link 604 router, but there's no way I'll install that again.
