Wieghing up the pros & cons of uploading your music to the net....
Personaly I don't upload any of the stuff I have made unless it's not going any where (I usualy give it a 4-6 month evaluation period to make sure I'm definatly not going to continue with the track) or if it's a fun track that I have made as a piss about. The main reason I don't upload is because I am quite possessive about my tunes (my babies) & the other thing is that I really don't see the point in uploading my tracks & feel that it could be more of a bad thing than a good thing as far as my future as an artist is concerned.
What is everyones view on uploading?..... I know some of us just do it for fun where as others take it very seriously & put alot of effort into it (I know I do) so the question is... are we selling ourselves short by uploading our music?

Selling yourself short, do you sell anything at all i wonder? The delusions of grandeur on this board can be staggering. Face it, if anyone were an artist of any merit and not just 'MP3 boy' they WOULD NOT BE ON THIS BOARD.

I upload stuff for feedback. I want to make music a career some day soon, and I view uploading it onto the internet as a sort of testing ground. As fieldwork.

i think the best way to get my music heard is to upload it then tell everyone i know to download it.
i've pretty much accepted the fact that nobody is going to pay me to listen to it anyway. so i'm just interested in getting heard.
of course if one of you wants to pay me for my tracks, i accept paypal and cashier's checks.

haha, you have no idea how stupidely wrong your comment is. There are a number of long standing label artists who post on this board.
There is nothing wrong with having a dream, and beleive it or not some people who do/have posted here have gone on to get label releases from being a humble 'MP3 boys' as you so ineliquently termed it.

Well it is compared to
a) other people quality of output.
b) the way it sounds in my head.
I am still learning, and finding out new things. I have only been making music for a year and I have learnt a lot in that time. I just see it is a hobbyist challenge.

Personally: Uploading tracks and having other mp3kids (yeah I consider us mp3kids because we upload mp3s primarily I believe... I could be wrong) listen to them is like home to me.
I'm used to it: I never send demos and I don't really bother with labels very much, except lately with mp3 labels because for me they are the best of both worlds (being able to do "just the music" as opposed to having to do the extracurricular bullshit like making covers, mailling CDs, negoaiating deadlines etc).
I think the chances are than no matter how good I get (ehhhhh hopefully I'll get good at some stage anyway) I'll still be posting bits and pieces on online messageboard because shit, you don't ignore your past and you guys will have been the ones who did it for me.
Like: What I see more... honour? In making it through word of mouth than having to suck up to labes to get a foot in the door.
If this never happens and I'm stuck here as an mp3kid forever I doubt I'll care because I'm hapy where I am.
As long as people on the net kee listening ot my tracks and sending e the occasional nice email about them then fuck the real world and their videoclips and record contracts, I'm happy with this.
But for now, I try not to take it too seriously, at the end of the day it's just another hobby I have, I'll nevermake a living out of it and I'm happy with it just being a timewaster for a few hours after work during the week.
I hope this doesn't come across as conceited or anything :\

Different things are gained from both free redistribution and commercial sale of things, and fortunately a human life comprises enough time and energy to have both. I don't release music, but I do release software, both as a job and freely online. Both obviously share my love of programming and problem solving, but other than that they fulfill very different desires.
Relax! you likely have at least 50 more years of life--do as you please.

i do drugs regardless of the brain damage.
also, the reason i (and i assume everyone else here) make music is to entertain people. i get great enjoyment out of listening to music, and if i can make someone else feel the same way, then mission accomplished.
making music and not letting anyone hear it would be like making a painting then locking it away in a dark closet forever. what's the point?

How many people are "signed" up to some internet label with their "album" to download? Latest figures put it at 10,000,000,000,000,000 electronic artists releasing the same "experimental" glitch in Widnes alone. Being on a label doesn't really have the same meaning anymore, anyone can do it, there are over 10,000,000,000,000,000 to choose from, and if you can't it's because you are really, really, really rubbish at making music.
Swapping MP3s of each others music is a community thing, a good thing, but it annoys me when people say "download my album". That's conceited and pretentious. Or worse, the way people don't hesitate to call themselves "artists". An artist is Picasso or the Aphex Twin, you are not an artist just because you fancy being one or you picked up Max/MSP once and hit the "Make Autechre Sound" button.

No no, I mean using the term "album". An album is "Led Zeppellin III", "SAW II" or even "Use your Illusion pt.1". A collection of MP3s, even if arranged to be listened to in order, does not make an "album".

You really do type some daft things...how the fuck have you came to the conclusion that only people who's work has received prior recognision can be called artists? A collection of tracks is termed an album regardless of the medium they are presented in/on. If Bleep offered an exclusive Aphex 'album' in download form only would you be emailing them to say they can't call it an album because it's just a collection of MP3's?
Also you have to tell me where this Glitch button is in Max/MSP so I can save myself the bother of learning anything.
I beleive you make music yourself. I would be interested in hearing some of your .
