high res cut beats

i have been trying to do shit like this for ages, and
because i've been using Reason mainly, i can only get as
high as 64th of a beat.

once i get my PowerBook (and the capability to rewire) i
want to try experimenting with some quicker-cut beats and
stuff.

Which application for Mac would be best for me to use?

I have Cubase 1.06, Ableton Live 3.02, Peak 4.11.

I can run floops under Virtual PC, but it seems a
little slow. I might only get away with making loops in
there, but that's all I'd use floops for anyways.

I'd really appreciate any help from you guys.

My attempts at some serious drill stuff will probably
crumble to white shit, but hopefully with your guys help I
can at least try

i don't wanna be lollygagging around with the standard stuff
i make

Cubase Cubase Cubaes!!

but for the moment with reason you can try to experiment
with some redicilous bpm numbers like if your gona make a
170 bpm track you set the bpm to 340 (170+170)

in reason: do the beats at 2x or 4x the normal speed. if you
want higher res on the drills or snarerushes you can go into
the change events and multiply the rush...

yeah that's what I do for Buzz... sometimes.
But usually I could do with just using the regular (e.g. 200
BPM) and triggering samples ... eh, like it triggers itself
twice, very fast (I set the speed myself). But that's more
for drill. But for cutting up, I get more than I need when
working with 8 TPB / 400 BPM.

i thought about trying that, but i haven't really gotten
round to it

thing i've noticed when you go at higher bpms (on Reason
anyways) is that things clip out a lot easier

is this just me, or does it actually do this?

anyways, thanks for the tip :)

i'll be sure to try it out

haven't got that problem on my old imac, and i rarely make
anything with the tempo set under 200 (ie reak bpm 100)

i guess it might have just been me then

lol

i was working at only 170bpm and everything seemed to be
clipping out easer....it must have just been me being over
zealous and lollygagging

hehe, you can be over zealous and lollygagging as much as
you want... another tip is to gate drumsounds instead of
just triggering them in the redrum. i found the beats to be
more "sharp" that way, great for snares and bassdrums.

please explain what you mean by gating the drums instead of
just triggering them?

*is stupid*

:)

in the redrum, you have a switch which lets you control the
way the sample is being played. with the default setting it
just to play the sample from beginning to end. if you flick
the switch to the gated setting (it's the one with a square
type symbol) it plays only as long as the note in the
drum-edit window last. so, with a snare drum played normally
you get tshhhhhh, with gated and a short note you get tsh.
does this make sense or is it just ramblings from a madman?

You tried turning the magnet off and manually doubling (or
even quadrupling, but after that it gets tricky) the beats
that way, imprecise of course, but it can sound good.

>vlari

oh yeah i get you now!

i always referred to that knob as the "release" of the
sample, but now gate seems much more appropriate :)

>Ceri CJ

yeh i've took the quantization off for some things, and yeh
it is a pain to draw the events, but it's still not quite
sharp enough, know what i mean?

maybe it might sound better if i try using the gate knob as
vlari said, along with this non-quantization technique

:)

thanks for everyone's suggestions so far

it's been helpful

i'd appreciate any more help if possible? :)

I just made a pretty awsome beat at 800BPM. I varied the res
from very low to very high and it came off quite nicely.
Although it was bloody fast... Proper drilling I tell yee
