i was thinking about getting a "merlin" fantasy sword, but
now they've got these incredibly nice looking new ones not
on the site yet that i almost feel as though i need.

not that it has anything to do with the movie sword, which
would've been slightly cooler

The katana is by far my favorite, just because it's a
beautiful weapon. I can't say much in the way of performance
though, because I've never trained with one.

Budogu has a variety of martial arts supplies,
including katana and Chinese shinken.

My first weapon is the French foil, but I can use an epee
passably too. I'm reasonable with paired butterfly swords
too.

I don't own a single sword. People who are just weapons nuts
and collect swords, but lack formal training in them tend
to:
a) Have really poor swords,
and
b) Be very poor at using them.

That would make sense. If people collect weapons for glamour
versus glory, so to speak, they fail to see the weapons'
instrinsic value, and thus are at a disadvantage, should
they be exposed to danger and not know how to use their
"collections".

Yes, there's a martial arts store in my town and whilst they
sell some proper gear (pads, gloves, bags, etc.) and some of
the simpler weapons are ok (my staff is from there), all the
swords they sell are real "toy" weapons. Sure, they've got a
reasonably sharp blade (although I'd question how long it'd
take to dull), but the balance feels wrong, grips on the
handle aren't very good, etc. of course, they're all nicely
decorated and look good enough and the little groups of
teenage kids drooling over them don't know any better. ;)

When I used to do Kung Fu, I came close to buying my own
pair of butterfly swords several times, but the main thing
was that if I bought some, I'd want some really nice
ones, that I'd literally keep for years. The other thing is
that at the time I didn't live anywhere with the space to
train with them (and practicing with swords in the park
where I used to live would be a good way of getting
arrested!)

I like swords, but I lack martial arts training so I dont
think I'll be buying swords any time soon. Knives however
are more up my alley. They are like mini swords, incase
anyone didn't know what a knife was. :P

"They are like mini swords"
Knife fighting is entirely different to sword fighting
though... an extremely messy affair and not something I'd
wish to try out ;)

I've got a throwing knife, but I've not had a chance to get
used to it (I lost my old one). Bit of a pain as I've not
got anywhere to practice with it.

I've got a Chinese Sabre - Back from my Wu Shu days - Still
sleep with it near the bed - Always good for destroying
flying insects if nothing else.

It's actually really well made - Quite heavy, but really
well balanced.

I'm definetly intending to get hold of a nice katana some
day.

I did a demonstration in Leicester one time, and I remember
this Tai Chi guy who had this Chinese long sword that
retracted all the way into the handle, then shot out, so
smoothely, with the flick of the wrist, into a perfectly
straight sword! Would love one of those...

I prefer the cold feel of gun metal pressed against my
temple while I contemplate the future.

I need a japanese sword to scrape the residue from my
helmet. I'm sure there are plenty that would do the job but
I want a really flashy cool one..what do you suggest?

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match
for a good blaster at your side, kid.
