i use a humidifier. I just have it run 24/7 and it keeps all
outside sounds away. Which is great in the morning!

I also cannot go to sleep without music, but I can't go to
sleep ifthe music is too interesting, and the problem is,..
I find most ambient really interesting, it's a cruel cycle

face with a knife

i learned something about ambient music today, in meditation
class.

its intended purpose is to be something that you can either
have in the foreground or background of your focus, but not
at something that leaps out and hits you with a particular
mood

so really a lot of the moody soundscapes that we hear
nowadays go against the purpose of ambient music.

Boogiepop phantom. a very very very very deep anime.
the 13 episodes interelate with one an other and each
episode is about a different person. its a puzzle that you
have to piece together with wit. you have to determine the
timelines of the events, whos who, and what in the FUCK is
going on

also about silence.. ive been learned that there is no such
thing. theres always tiny sounds going on around that you
can follow as they happen, and actually use as a reference
point to your focus

this is another means to come into the present (more
meditation speak here)

true, but i read once that a room of silence was created by
scientists. and those who went in it got severe headaches

interesting point you make. Which is why you can hear
silence and why "silence is so loud"

to the human ear, what feels most like silence, is the sound
of the earth (it makes LOTS of noise, all the time.. low
rumbling), which is why underground caves and stuff like
that are the most "silent" places on earth..

ahh this talk reminds me of the scenes in 2001, when dave is
outside in the pod and there is no sound at all. that did my
nerves in!!

the walls were specially designed to absorb all sound, even
your heartbeat.
scary but true.

i saw pics in an old issue of OMNI

you would hear your breathing etc travelling through the
wood of your body to your eardrums.

but i can certainly appreciate the sounds would be
different. i just have to agree with virgin that the silence
wouldnt be total.

The room of silence.. that reminds me.. there's a room with
almost NO earth-magnetism (compass just spins) in the
basement here.. it was built by some physics-students...

I can't fall asleep with music on, period. The only real
''outside influence'' that can get me to sleep are the
sports update channels that loop the same highlights and
stories again and again and again. Even that tried and true
dreamscape warrior, ambient music, can't get me to sleep. It
has to go off.

I used to. Either music or the tv or just something !

The only time I ever need the tv on to go to sleep is if I'm
in the house on my own.

It's more a comfort thing than anything.

no.

i once fell asleep listening to music, and i felt even a
little guilty about it - by respect for the artist and the
music...

anyway now i can't fall asleep to silence anymore -
just because i can't have silence anymore, my left ear does
something weird when laying... not tinnitus, some kind of
very soft pulsating stuff... hard to describe.
it used to make me a bit mad and prevent me from sleep, but
now i got used to it.

white noise

music keeps me up cause i want to listen to it, much like tv
or a movie
