in the thread about pitchfork's review of MHTRTC, fleetmouse said if it wasn't a 10, then he didn't know what was... and i tried to come up with some... and you know, it's really tough to do... there are a lot of great albums out there... but a ten indicates perfection, and i just don't know how many albums i can say are perfect...
what albums would you rate as 10/10 and what constitutes a 10 rating to you?

I don't even know if I have "10" albums.
they should be absolutely perfect. I don't know if that's even possible.

I think MHTRTC is a 10.
Dire Straits' "Sultans of Swing" comes close. Probably a 9.8 in my books.

in utero is my favourite, but nevermind is more consistant and as a pop-rock record it's brilliant. every fucking song on that album is great, there's not a weak spot.
but i like the more personal, heavier mood on in utero. so, that's really my favourite.

I think there is such a thing as a 10 album, when it makes complete sense, it creates it's own musical universe, it's own rules.. i am drunk.. anyway i'd say:
"Low" David Bowie "Station to Station" David Bowie "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" - Aphex Twin "Hats" The Blue Nile "How I learned to love the bootboys" The Auteurs "Dog Man Star" Suede "A Northern Soul" The Verve "Another Green World" Brian Eno "The Return of the Durrutti Column" The Durrutti Column "Laughing Stock" Talk Talk "Hex" Bark Psychosis "D.I. Go Pop" Disco Inferno "Get Lost" The Magnetic Fields "Porcupine" Echo & the Bunnymen "Floodland" Sisters of Mercy "If you're feeling sinister" Belle & Sebastian "Bytes" Black Dog "Hatfull of Hollow" The Smiths "Time Tourist" B12
..for me, that is.

They have to be pretty much absolutely perfect, d'uh. Which doesn't necessarily mean that every song is a masterpiece in the traditional sense. I like a bit of sillyness and a quickly knocked off pop song here and there.
The only 10 albums for me are as follows- The Beatles- The Beatles The Beatles- Rubber Soul The Beatles- Abbey Road The Beatles- Please Please Me The Beatles- A Hard Day's Night The Beatles- Revolver The Smiths- The Queen is Dead Joy Division- Unknown Pleasures Harry Nilsson- Aeriel Ballet Echo and the Bunnymen- Ocean Rain Frank Zappa- Freak Out New Order- Power, Corruption, and Lies The Soft Machine- Volume 1 The Soft Machine- Volume 2 any Supremes compilation Harry Nilsson- Pandemonium Shadow Show The Soft Boys- Underwater Moonlight Freescha- What's Come Inside You? (maybe I'm getting ahead of myself? Will I give a shit about it in 5 years? Who knows, but I love this so much)
There's also a bunch of video game soundtracks I hold in as high a regard as any of these. Chrono Cross, Silent Hill 2, Super Castlevania 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, Thunder Force 4, Kirby Superstar, Super Mario World 2, the original Star Fox, Castlevania- Rondo of Blood, etc.
I have no idea what to do to make any of these better, except for one glaring fuckup that totally destroys my un-theory. Gumming up the works is this- there's actually a nagging flaw on my favorite album ever, called ''Wild Honey Pie''. But something like A Hard Day's Night or Underwater Moonlight, I can't imagine ANY tweaks needed to make it perfect. Yet, ''The Beatles'' is the best shit I've ever heard. So there's some intangible. Or a flaw in my logic. Or maybe numbers just weren't meant to be assigned. But those are my 10s, fuck logic. I guess they're just the ones I enjoy the most, warts and all. A 10 album is any of those. Maybe I'm not harsh enough, there's a lot of them. But... that just means there's a lot of them. Good news for me, you can't have too many 10s.
