Absynth by Native Instruments. Fantastic for pads. "Crystal" is quite good too.

Really? There are a lot of great presets available for it... no shame in using them for a bit, till you get used to the program.
You'll find it quite hard to get (original) nice textured pads if you can't make your own synth patches :-/
Do you have Reason? Malstrom is a tolerable substitute for doing pads...

Yep, I agree Albino is good too. You might also like to try Loung Lizard's EP-2, it's designed as a substitute for suitcase pianos like the rhodes, etc. but you can get decent pad sounds out of it (although not one that evolve over time when you hold a note down for 16 like you could with absynth).

exciton, voxsynth, A1 (comes with cubase) and alot of other synths, just dl a bunch of them and try for yourself. absynth and fm7 are quite complex to work with, the presets are nice though (i feel too quilty to use them)

There's a hacked version of absynth 2 about that is pretty unstable (when you use custom waveforms with it/try to vocode), but absynth 1-1.5 are fine. You might also like those more to begin with as they are a bit simpler.
I don't know of a good faq for absynth, the only advice I can give is to look at the existing patches and see how connecting/disconnecting certain bits changes the sound. Also to consider it as a synth with fx (delay/reverb) tacked on.
