this artist has made a record made of nothing but him rubbing his microphone gently for 72 minutes. it's called "Tower". yeah, this kind of thing shouldn't surprise you anymore by now.
...
so what? well... nothing. i don't know. is there anything to think of it that hasn't been thought before?
...
i wonder if an artist ever made a full album of complete silence. i'm sure it has happened.

john cage's 4'33" is (you guessed it) four minutes and thirty three seconds of silence. cage performed it several times with a full orchestra. he actually went out and printed blank sheet music for every musician -- and he got up to conduct it.

I remember hearing about a record entirely composed of the noise of blank audio cassettes. Not that silent though.
And remember kids, there's no such thing as silence.

does a silent orchestra playing silence in a silent wood while a tree falls silently to the ground make a sound?

i was just reading an interview with Japanese improv guitarist Taku Sugimoto and he said some interesting things on the subject:
"At present it seems that silence is still regarded as sort of a horrible thing in music, even though it has been almost 50 years since [John Cage's] 4'33''... Do you think that the mysterious relationship between sounds and silence could possibly give us a new scope for the imperceptible world?"
In answer to his own question, Sugimoto speaks of his 'road to damascus' experience at a performance organized by the Belin Wandelweiser group of Antoine Beuger's Calme Entendu (Spinoza). "At the beginning of the concert, for 30 minutes, nothing," he recalls.
"Then Beuger read a book by Spinoza, one sentence for 8 seconds, then some 20 minutes of silence again and again-- it was a five hour concert. Just an excerpt from his piece. My ears were changing. I was sitting next to a door--the door opened, and it was a fantastic sound, like i have never experienced. The sound was very erotic, like an object. I could almost touch it. At that time I had no idea how to explain that experience, it was very new to me."

I was in a rather respectable hall when I once witnessed it being 'performed'. I made lots of noise opening a rather fat book and reading it. They want ambient noise? they got it.

people should definitely check out Sugimoto... his own work is often sparse... but not uber-indulgently sparse... just very delicate and mysterious sounding... a good album to check out would be his collaboration with Gunter Muller and Keith Rowe called the world turned upside down... definitely worth checking out if you're adventurous...
