Has anyone sent music to Warp?

M on 2001-04-30 18:14 [#00005200]

Have you sent your own personal music that you've created to
warp or rephlex with the hopes of getting on the label? What
happened?

Aron? from Canada on 2001-04-30 18:59 [#00005202]

I plan on sending Warp (not Rephlex) some of my stuff soon.
I just put a demo together last week.

Hey Aron, any place I can hear your stuff online ?

Aron? from Canada on 2001-04-30 23:18 [#00005245]

Yeah, you can hear my music at:

www.acidplanet.com/lounge/Artistdetail.asp?Artistname=Aron+
Zacharias

soory, it's kinda long URL. Thoes are some of my old songs,
I don't usually realease my music anymore, uness i make a
really kickin' track (but that usually doesn't happen).

Chris Ochre from rhymes with bum on 2001-05-01 01:26 [#00005265]

Funnily enough, I'll be posting my 3 track MD tommorrow to
Warp HQ. I've thought about Rephlex but feel my music's just
not fuck-up enough! Anyone tried Toytronic records? - I just
chanced upon their site when I was checking out some Mr.
Projectile.

Cheers,

Chris.

I'm working on a 'compilation' album to send to warp (or
rephlex) of ambient, analogue, industrial, jungle, and acid
tunes, and i'll probably put my 20-minute 'weird ambient'
tune on there as well...

i've just finished a huge bunch of songs spread over three
albums, all twisted fucked up beats i'm after an address for
WARP HQ can anyone help . i'm specifically after a snail
mail address but any url will help

TekN010G from Australia on 2001-05-01 06:36 [#00005283]

hey rob (bucephalus),.. I think you should put "decay" on
it,.. It's the best ambient track I've heard from you so
far,..

M from noitacol on 2001-05-01 06:58 [#00005288]

First of all, everyone please post a url of where we can
hear your music. Now you have no reason to be modest since
you were asked:).

Someone (I forget who since you can't read the messages when
you write this) said they POSTED their music to warp HQ? Is
it really that easy? Hmmm... I bet they get millions of
submissions. Where do you post it? I think the best thing to
do would be to make a totally wicked package and mail it to
them. Like send them a huge refrigerator box with a bunch of
barbie doll heads used as stuffing and your little cd
somewhere buried underneath. And decorate the outside of the
box with wicked drawings or something. Make it stand out
from the hordes of other submissions. I don't know exactly
how to do it, but I guess if you mail a copy of your own cd
to your own house with a postal date or something, that is
copyright proof, so nobody can rip you off. My music is at
www.mp3.com/artificialselection if anyone cares.

TekN010G from Australia on 2001-05-01 07:02 [#00005289]

M: Most people get asked to put up the URL of their music
all the time,.. If you want the URL's just look at an old
thread with a music related topic, and you'll find the URL's
of everyone,.. It's just a bit annoying when you have to
keep posting your URL,..

Also,.. some of us are posted up in the "links" section, you
might wanna check that out

I sent a minidisc to Rephlex, though in retrospect it was
utter shite and I'm not surprised I haven't heard from
them.

I sent a CD to V/Vm yesterday, just for the hell of it
really but there would be a certain kudos in putting
something out through them.

Wow, talk about a blast to the past. Yeah, Warp didn't
contact me. Lol.

I'd forget about the big guys. Send you stuff to smaller
labels. Your more likely to get a response, even if they
don't want to release your stuff, they might give you some
feedback (like Chris at Toytronic did for me, nice bloke).
These days it seems the larger labels let the smaller ones
to do their A&Ring for them anyway (BrothomStates excluded).

Try finding out who runs the label and putting on the
envelope......'as requested by......' or 'F.A.O. ......' at
least they'll open it.

i find it a bit strange that some of you consider your music
worthy of release, yet don,t know any lables smaller than
warp or rephlex. maybe go to the record store and check
other things out, then see if you can do better??? i promise
you, the standard is generally very high.......

i suspect they're busy running the labels - there only run
by two or three people - i was reading leaf's records demo
policy the other day -worth keeping in mind rather than
being too
bitter read:
If you have never heard of any of the labels hosted at
PostEverything or do not know what kind of music they
release please make the effort to research this; sending
unsuitable material is a waste of your time and ours.

All labels have artists on their rosters who have come to
them via unsolicited "demos". However please take the time
to read and digest the following points before sending
anything to any PostEverything label.

DO NOT send MP3 files attached in e-mail, they will be
regarded as spam and binned unheard. DO NOT expect anyone to
visit websites to download MP3s or other digital media. Life
is too short!!

Acceptable formats are CD(R), VINYL & CASSETTE. Please check
with individual labels before sending material on other
formats.

Approach sending a demo to a label with the expectation that
you will be extremely lucky to receive any more than 30
seconds attention. Put the thing you absolutely think is the
best first. No one ever failed to succeed with a label by
sending too little material. Keep it short!!

Labels do listen to all submissions, but it is not their
highest priority, so they may take a while to get round to
it. However nagging them about it will not produce anything
but putting your submission on the bottom of the pile. Do
not expect anyone to acknowledge receipt of your submission
or send it back to you (individual labels may return demos
if you include SAE or IRCS but don't assume this is general
policy).

Please make sure your name and contacts are on the CD AND
packaging. The CD may become divorced from the packaging and
the disc (or other medium) may become divorced from the
case. Assume that labels receive piles of demos and yours
may get lost in the pile.

None of this is intended to discourage you, just give you a
sense of realism. If you receive no positive res

None of this is intended to discourage you, just give you a
sense of realism. If you receive no positive response do not
assume you may never receive a positive response. Sometimes
your material may be appreciated but may not quite have that
elusive something, perhaps your next submission will.

If a label hears something it can work with they will always
get back to you.

Please remember that all PostEverything labels are
independent, self-financing ventures. Developing talent
costs money and time. They will have to be very convinced
before they can commit that time and money to your project.
They are more likely to be convinced by material you
consider "finished" and ready for release.

There are countless releases jostling for public attention
on every level from pure pop to the most far-flung margins.
PostEverything labels are purposely chosen for their high
degree of sophistication and artistic integrity. The people
who will listen to your submission have heard a great amount
of music. So ask yourself: do I have something to add to the
debate? Do I have something as good as or better than what
they are already releasing?

worth keeping that in mind as it's probably the same as any
other label

i was signed from an unsolicited demo.

it can happen but is very rare.

i don't think it is that rare is it ?

well it is rare. youll notice on alot of label message
boards that alot of the artists on the labels know/knew
eachother from before. so a signed artist will intro the new
artist to the label and the new artist is signed from there.
not really from a demo.

like i said, it does happen. but not as often as the above.
kinda like, its not what you know but who you know. i think
im being clear, let me know if im not.

the label i was signed to is n5MD.

http://www.n5MD.com

my first release just happened to be this tuesday. ;)

i have already put people i know (unknowns) in touch with my
label which has resulted in two new signings. in dealing
with the label and others, i see that this is indeed a
trend.

sometimes it seems everyone is getting signed up

sometimes it seems no-one is

i've almost given up on sending demos, looks like i shall
have to start talking to people and get into this whole
'knowing someone who knows someone' business

like Ochre + someone said.
GO for smaller labels... make a name for yourself. play some
shows.
show that you have good enough music to sell small quantites
at least...
then bigger labels might give you more of a listen.

that's just one way.

OR

you could have "the next big thing" ...
something that is SO unique and new that the bigger labels
want it and will release it from your no name ass.
;)

but seriously...
I agree the standards are high.
there is some insanely good music out there.

Bah, I got no reply from Warp for my music, and I really
thought it was good (for me)...had all these crazy 5/4
rythms against weird japanese-like melodies.

I think demos get you nowhere. I mean, who ever heard of any
artist getting signed by a demo, eh!? I also find out my
favorite artists got signed from knowing people, and it's
depressing, coz I know NO ONE.

I am trained in the art of time and motion studies.

I think I should be employed by warp and rephlex for one
month and carry out an in-depth time study and calculate the
inefficiencies.

I will issue a white paper and recommend an action plan that
will suggest working practice improvements over the next few
years + a modernisation programme.

In the words of Derrick and Clive, circa 1970s,

All those who involve themselves with the government etc
are,

"Cunts"

wanting new music!
