Q. for music makers (even if it's guitar music/whatever):
Which do you prefer:
1. Trying to replicate the "sound in your head" as close as possible(down to exact rhythms, same slightly off beat bits, getting synth patches as close as possible to how you imagine them
or,
2. Having a rough idea in you head (probably just the genre and a general mood) and working in that area until you do something good.
or,
3. Just noodling around until you stumble on something good and then building a track around that one element (be it a bassline, synth patch, drum loop/whatever).
Personally, I like 2 best. 1 is probably the best sense of achievement when you do it right, but is often crushingly slow. 3. Can yield good "novel" stuff, but it can take hours to do anything good and you usually don't feel it's "yours" as much as tracks made by methods 1/2.
Your thoughts?

Ceri, well as silly as it may seem, yeah i reckon....i start off with "1" but gradualy move to "2" and then "3", then move my way back up again to "1".

If I meet up with musicians, then improvisation is usually what we'll do. If I am making a track myself then can take the time to compose it step by step, but as I have no band I usually won't get time to do this with others. Improvisation is a lot more rewarding anyway, and even if it doesn't come off, it's a lot of fun. As far as making music by myself goes, I'll have an idea of what I'm going to do before I start creating.

it depends on what i'm writing, usually 1 or 3.
like when i'm inspired by something, i'll usually start off with 1. when i'm through with that and need to expand, 3 is the way i'll head next. most of my more mashup beats or intricate melodies come from 3, after creating central themes (basic beats, melodies) with 1.

agreed with you gwely...i'm always building tracks around 1 or 2 bar loops.
it's usually an drumloop and an bassline, synth and that stuff come later.
i prefer the beat programming rather than making melodies.

Same path as hobbes' mostly. (1)Occasionally I have this great melody in my head but when I sit down behind the machine to translate it I can't seem to get the right notes going so I end it with something that sounds forced and totally unlike the idea I had and bingo, it's another possible great melody down the drain.
(2)I have general ideas on what I want to create, like specific genres, then I usually start with trying to create synth that I like and the rest sort of adds to it naturally, trying out sounds that go along fine with it and discarding the rest. You're right about this method being crushingly slow as from there I have about 45 songs that are all unfinished. They sound promising but I'm afraid I'll mess 'em up with the next sound I add so I leave(forget) 'em "til I have the right inspiration" for them again.
(3)Or I want to make music but have no fecking clue on what I'll make so I just start out somewhere because I'm in the mood to make music.
