why do so many people hate drukqs?

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2001-12-30 07:24 [#00064950]

i'd like to hear different people's opinions on this. i can
understand why it got canned by so many journalists. the
same kinda thing happened with radiohead's 'amnesiac' album.
it's a huge (critically/artistically) band putting out new
material after several very critically successful releases
and the journalists figure, why not be different and say it
sucks even tho it's perfectly good? sure, drukqs isn't a
huge departure from the windowlicker single, but the music
is relatively different on almost all of the tracks and it's
also really solid music. i don't exactly know what richard
could have put out that would've not gotten bad reviews from
certain publications. i don't think it has anything to do
with music. but my question is, why do so many fans hate on
the album? what exactly did they expect, and what are their
gripes?

Personally I like Drukqs ... admittedly tho for some reason
it just hasn't grabbed my attention as much as other RDJ
releases.

I mean, I listen to the fast tracks on drukqs and am blown
away at the intricacies the variations and energy that went
into it. The piano tracks are fragile and beautiful .. by
all means contains all the ingredients for a top notch album
(and indeed in some respects it is). But for some reason,
(maybe the tracklisting) I haven't had the overwhelming
need/urge to listen to it over and over [type thing]. Might
take a little while longer, or that I'm currently more in a
Funkstorung mood - ??? mmmhhh

Xanatos from NYC on 2001-12-30 08:41 [#00064957]

It took me a long time to like drukqs...I was real
dissapointed at first, now I love it.

Avril 14th makes me laugh tho...most of the piano songs
except for besku3nmp or whatever are garbage.

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2001-12-30 08:49 [#00064961]

i like all the piano tracks, but there are about 3 of them
that aren't really that original. i think my favorite is the
one that begins with "hy" (track 14 disc 1).

I don't think it's shit, I just take it for what it is - a
compilation of the stuff he's had unreleased for ages. There
aren't many killer tracks on there - Vordhosbn, Cock/Ver 10,
couple more - but I still listen to it a lot.

PostModernVancouver from Downtown Vancouver on 2001-12-30 14:09 [#00064982]

To be quite honest.
It's only a few major publications that canned DRUKQS.
I am obsessive when it comes to reviews of any kind, and
with DRUKQS I found about 35 maybe 40 on the internet, on a
worldwide scale.
Looking at it from that angle, then I've come to the
conclusion that about 85% of the reviewers either like or
love the album, or some think that its truly the album of
the year.
I personally think it blows away anything released this
year. bar none...

od from perth on 2001-12-30 14:22 [#00064984]

im not into it as much as i am most of his other stuff
coz...(to me anyway) a lot of it sounds too similar.
theres drill tracks, the two sorta piano/hihat sounding ones
(ie track 1 disc 1) and the other ambient stuff.

i liek RDJ album better because there seems to be a lot more
ideas thrown in.

but thats just how i see it.

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-12-30 16:45 [#00064997]

Fucking LOVED Drukqs. His best ever, I think, it takes his
acid stuff to a new level of insanity, and the soft stuff is
great as well. It isn't really REVOLUTIONARY, but dig it.

Super Magnetic Neo from Oz on 2001-12-30 17:02 [#00065003]

When I first got it I loved it. Then I went through a stage
of not really liking it. But now I'm convinced it's a great
album, I'm really into it.

I just love the last part of Mount saint blah blah... it
sounds soooooo damn good!!

rF on 2001-12-30 17:25 [#00065010]

its awesome, but still second to icbyd and saw85-92 in my
opinion..
but i love the piano tracks and the fast stuff as well
(especially st michaels mount and meltphace 6)..

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-30 17:25 [#00065011]

well that would be third wouldn't it? :)

Caserol Joe the Chubby from mpls on 2001-12-30 19:03 [#00065036]

I don't know why so many poeple dislike it, but one reason
it appeals to me is that it has a good flow. The mix of
ambient, drill n bass and piano tracks make it a pleasant
listen that that you don't get from albums like RDJ and
ICBYD (hardly a quiet moment on these).

nene on 2001-12-30 20:03 [#00065039]

I think the reason a lot of people were disappointed was
that there's no new sound on the album. the drill tracks are
the same basic style. sure they have more detail, but
there's nothing quite as exquisite as say flim. the piano
tracks aren't terribly original, and a couple are just
embarrasing. plus the album doesn't have much flow from one
track to the other, sort of like the white album in that
respect. I still think it's a quality release, just not his
best album.

Archrival on 2001-12-30 21:51 [#00065046]

"i liek RDJ album better because there seems to be a lot
more ideas thrown in."

hmmmmm Are you crazy or something??? you must be joking.

zetre on 2001-12-30 22:18 [#00065058]

I think he´s being serious.

Archrival on 2001-12-30 22:23 [#00065059]

a lot more ideas thrown in...where?

Archrival on 2001-12-30 22:24 [#00065060]

I mean you got like 54 ideas just on one track like
Ziggomatic17.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-12-30 22:29 [#00065062]

I like Drukqs... I like The RDJ album a lot more though...

Rob.E. from London on 2001-12-30 22:53 [#00065064]

I'd rather have it than not. There are a lot of good tracks
on it, and overall, a good mixture, although he could've
called it "..I Dont Care, Because You do".Do u really think
he gives a shit what the critics think? }:>

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2001-12-30 23:11 [#00065066]

no i think richard couldn't care less about the reviews, and
to be fair to us he has made it quite clear drukqs is a
miscellaneous tracks compilation, although he has actually
said that he put effort into the sequencing. i'm so glad to
see how many people agree with me about the quality of the
album tho. i love it, and i don't think richard has made
anything so intricate (listen to the polyrhythms on "mt
saint michel + saint michaels mt" wow. and that's just one
example) since SAW2, and therefor it's actually my favorite
after that album, with the RDJ album coming in at a close
3rd. i mean all his releases are unique so it's not totally
fair to rank them, but that's a rough estimate. i think
richard totally outdid any drill/idm tracks he's ever made,
and i don't find the interlude tracks boring or embarassing
at all. some are more powerful than others tho. anyway,
drukqs is probably my favorite album of this year and i
bought a ton of good ones - bjork, radiohead, plaid, ae,
squarepusher, mogwai, dj krush, etc. looking forward to the
rephlex release in the next few momths.

ww_sketcher from Ottawa, Canada on 2001-12-31 03:02 [#00065092]

Meh, some of the tracks are good, but how the hell can you
say it's his best? Sure, some are enjoyable, but aren't even
close to quality like "Come To Daddy", "Windowlicker",
"Girl/Boy" or things like that.

Sure, some of it crazy crap that's enjoyable, but only cause
it's like "Wow ! New Aphex Album! Joy!"

And that's it, imo. :/

Caserol Joe the Chubby from MPLS on 2001-12-31 03:22 [#00065096]

We're on really different pages I guess. Come to Daddy is
one of my least favrite Aphex tracks. I remember liking it
in 9th grade before I knew of Aphex, but I find it extremely
boring now.

LeMoN on 2001-12-31 06:32 [#00065105]

I personally feel that while the piano pieces are generally
well done, they are slightly amateurish. That is completely
acceptable given he has just started really tinkering with
piano music recently. I think it is cool that he is excited
about expressing himself in a new way and wishes to share it
with us, as he said that the piano pieces on Drukqs are his
first ever. He seemed to have lost alittle of his passion in
writing and sharing music after the release of the RDJ
album. CTD and Windowlicker were good albums, but nothing
too special. His composition and form of expression seem to
be completely familar, yet at the same time strikingly
different. First time I listened to the album, it didnt
sound like the Aphex I knew. Sounded different, can't quite
put my finger on how so however. I can say that I am
generally pleased with the direction he is taking, and I am
looking forward to seeing where he is going with it.

Oh, and I consider it second to SAW II as his overall best
album.

od from perth on 2001-12-31 06:53 [#00065109]

never mind......
im just n0ot into the style of the new drill stuff it seems
liek hes just thrown in a fuckload of samples together
rather than working hard with one or two breaks thru the
track.
dont fuckin flame me coz of my opinion (or my spelling, lol)

titsworth_courier from washington, dc on 2001-12-31 08:27 [#00065117]

i agree completely with lemon. as for come to daddy, as a
song i find it really dull and one of my very least
favorites (though i too was quite into it when it came out
and i only knew a couple other aphex joints), and as an ep
it has also diminished a lot in appeal as i've bought more
and more releases. i think half of it is great but a little
bare, the other half a little boring. prolly my least
favorite. but yea, it's great to see richard excited about
putting music out again. i hope the rephlex release is a
full album. didn't he hint at releasing his more recent
piano tracks? i wonder if it'll be just that (which would be
cool) or another mix. either way, this is definitely his
best year (12 months) since 1996 in my opinion, so we as
fans may as well try to embrace it.

muir from sac on 2001-12-31 12:29 [#00065146]

i think its a completely great album. parts do seem to get
slightly boring but there is genius in it i can smell it.
for one, he had the guts to put out something different than
he was expected to put out. im certain he knew some people
wouldnt enjoy the fact that there are a few almost amen drum
breaks in there(heaven forbid) and a classic 808 clap sound.
but hell, doing the unexpected is admirable and gutsy. and
i truely believe that all of his music in some way or
another have alot of sarcastic ironic themes that mock the
norms of music either by immitating them in some form or
crapping all over them(depending on the song).
ive heard him quoted saying "there is alot of piss taking in
my music".
and when you really get down to it you have to ask "did
richard enjoy making this album?" if he did then its genius
cause thats what its about.

im thinking this will get a few replies..
